He isn't far off in that statement. Chiellini's strength is his marking, tackling and just plan being a no-nonsense tough guy. He is meant to prevent goals, not be an allstar with the ball at his feet.
i agree on chiellini's strenght

i totally disagree with claiming cannavaro was able to dribble and pass, he was just as bad.
this was especially visibale when paired with chiello at 2010WC, because none of the cb could pass.

bonucci is much better at it, and will perform a whole lot better with competent fullbacks.
we dont need a new cb, we need a leftwinger and a special forward.

it doesnt win you cups, but it wins you league's

I'd like to see this formation:

We need:

-Lugano->3M (his clause)
-Vucinic->18M
-Backup RB
-Backup LW (Estigarribia could be nice)

I am willing to give Marchisio a last chance to prove himself, this time in a three men midfield. If he doesn't step up, he's gonna see the bench.

I think that Conte will eventually switch to the 4-3-3 when he will understand that Pirlo doesn't work in a two men midfield, that if he isn't stubborn.

I reckon you swap Lugano for Bonnuci and i reckon you're looking at Juventus 2011/12. I'm starting to get the distinct impression that we will only sign one more player and that will be Vucinic

That would be a good summer mercato BUT ONLY IF all the remaining deadwood is sold at reasonable prices. I think Marotta needs to trim the squad down to 25 players. It would leave Juventus with a solid team for 2011/12, a season without Europe. The addition of 1 star (a new forward), a new left back (if Ziegler/De Ceglie don't perform) and a new center back in 2012/13 would be needed when champions league football is here again.

You're assuming that squad is god enough for a top 3 finish. Let's say that Milan and merda are clearly ahead of us, we are competing with Napoli & Roma at least for one spot. Not to mention that there is still Udinese, fiorentina and Lazio that could yet strengthen before the end of August. That being said we will actually need a lot of luck to make 3rd spot.

The problem as I see it is, that squad is built for a top 3 finish, if we have a bad run of injuries, a spell of bad form, run into a highly motivated team then all of a sudden we finish 5th and we fail. If we go out and purchase some real quality (we will have to over pay to get them but so be it!) and build a squad to compete to win Serie A and be run into bad luck we still finish second or third, make the Champions League and with the financial benefits that comes with that we can continue to strengthen with true quality.

I simply fear that if we build a squad with ambitions of top 3 only, we will simply be paving the way for a dynasty of mediocrity

We beat Milan and Inter with a lesser squad. We struggled with the lesser teams.

Don't expect Napoli and Lazio to repeat the feat. of last season, even Napoli's coach said that.

good point. Personally, I think Lazio are being grossly underestimated by people here and with one more CB and a mid, which they are gonna get, will be a very strong candidate for 3rd place.

Udinese, on the other hand, I don't see finishing better than 7-8th this year; doubt they would recover this quickly from selling off a good part of their best players.
Fiorentina is a shot in the dark at this point, I think.

All in all, I'd put Juve, Roma, Napoli, Lazio more or less at the same level - I am considering future signings, given the rumours - in the fight for 3rd place, provided Milan and Inter come out as strong as expected.

As you said, it's dangerous building a team for 3rd place considering plans often don't pan out exactly.

So did Cesena and Palermo with Milan, and Udinese and some others with Inter.
Parma beet the crap out of Juve but that didn't exactly helped them finish above you.

Which is why I'm saying we should focus on beating the lesser clubs not the big ones, because that wasn't our problem.

you guys are countering my post with my post lol ..
in theory, yes, but in practice a team's deficiencies will show in games vs weaker opposition too and the lost pts vs bigger teams also count in the end - the final ranking is basically averaging out a team's performance throughout the entire season and not only over a select group of games.

For example, in theory, a weaker team can become champion in a league by losing all games vs their direct rivals (stronger teams) and winning all the other games ... but how often do you see this in practice - vast majority of the time, the team winning the league is the best team in that league too, thanks to a season of ~40 games providing a big enough 'sample' in order to smear out any flukes aka stat. error

you're still saying what I'm saying, what are we arguing about lol

our squad needs to ditch the autopilot against the lower half of the leauge.
Ok, I am watching a movie now and maybe I am misreading your posts :D

anyways, the point I am trying to make is in line with what Cirillo said - you need to strengthen your team and don't rely on somebody else doing badly to get you guys into CL :p
