Why is it called soccer AND football? (9 Viewers)

I've never heard a satisfying answer.

(Interestingly, in Italy it's know as calcio, of course---which is "kick")

well basically everywhere in the world its called football or futball or some similar word, but since the americans already had a ' football ' I guess they invented another word. My reasoning anyway, though it should be football considering the english invented it.

Basically, as I understood it, "football" in the U.S. was already called for.

Of course, the U.S. already called for "the World Series", which seems particularly weird given the upcoming baseball World Cup (as if I care...).

It's just the American culture's influence on the world.. It doesn't have any official meaning..

Whilst most people believe these days that 'soccer' is an american bastardised word for football... The name 'soccer' actually originated in England... When the modern game was first developed in england, we had two types of football... Rugby Football and association football... To seperate the 2, Rugby became known as 'rugger' and Association football became 'assoc' which gradually became the term 'soccer'. For a time the name 'soccer' was widely used around the globe

Gradually 'soccer' was phased out around the footballing world and 'association football' became jus plain football... When the game was introdued to Northern America, they took the now defunct term 'soccer' as to avoid confusion with their own 'American Football' .... Simple as that !

Which isn't exaclty without an ounce of truth actually...since the term soccer became defunct by the time Americans adopted it to prevent any mix-up with American football, i guess you could still say they did coin the term, in a way.

Not that I have anything against it or anything, that's just my theory on why so many people have the perception that the term soccer was coined by the Americans.
