yeah i agree, its used rather liberally.
In terms of the Koreans- I believe they brainwashing they go through happens due to the strict control over their contact with the outside world, both in terms of media, and the importing of goods, products. Im sure the trade embargo the US has with NK since the early 50s has influenced their situation in a bad way.
Due to the lack of knowledge of the outside world, they believe that the only system is the one they have. And this is the only way that makes sense. In their eyes its perfectly logical to risk lives to save Kim's pictures because thats the only way they know. And nobody has said its illogical because its punishable.
This has produced a warped society and culture in North Korea, similar to that in Iraq except even more severe. Since they only people who knew of pre-Communist life would have been over 60-70 years old. The Koreans wouldnt have any idea of how to rule themselves as a result and create an organised and effective government for themselves.

If we took someone out of NK and "taught" them the ways of the west, would WE be brainwashing them to our political beliefs and moral values, or unbrainwashing them?
I think you said previously the "value of human life is relative".
It would seem that the definition of brainwashing is also relative, depending upon which side of the political and moral divide you are earning your crust on:frown:

it could be argued, but the majority of the world thinks the ways of the west is acceptable, so our 'brainwashing' would be good.
then again we also could be giving them the option to follow their own values rather than that imposed upon them by an unpopular government.

I think Josh pretty much summed up your two options, but AFAIK it was a subconscious, impulsive decision, due to the fact that the official religion in NK is worshipping the Kims as Gods. Now I'm not here to bag on anyone's religion here, but that's just fscked.
After reading both of your posts, I guess you mean that, the difference between NK and, for lack of a proper education on my part, I'll say the values of "The West", is that on this side, the individual has free will to choose, even if that means communism. They are exposed to more idealogical concepts than the restricted mono-political, atheistic, socialism preached by The Party they get there, but over here they can get on down and have a party.
