Italy

- Let's first get the obvious reasons out of the way : the rigid labour market, crime (organised or not - Milan used to be a safe city once..), illegal immigration, drugs (apparently we have one of the highest rates of heroin addicts in Europe), the North/South divide, the ageing and shrinking population and of course the guy in charge at the moment.

- The mummy boys. They're everywhere. People in their late 20's/early 30's who still live with their parents, get their clothes washed and ironed out, their food prepared and their bills paid. Granted, no one makes the risotto alle fragole like mother but ffs there comes a time when you need to get your act together and move out. Many have a steady job and could afford to live on their own, even in these times of raising cost of living. Others are just profesional students, playing on the fact that you can re-pass failed exams ad infinitum and thus taking 10 years for a degree that would normally need 4 or 5 (ironically, many of those study political sciences).

- Campanilismo , literally bell-towerism. That's the tendency to be over-attached to your own roots to the point of disliking your neighbour. While this phenomenon is of course present elsewhere (a Bordelais or a Hamburger won't relate very well with, say, a Parisian or someone from Munich), it is all the more evident in Italy, for historical reasons. In some regions (Tuscany or Veneto), there is a fierce rivalry between certain cities or even between different areas of a same city.

- The asphyxiating omnipresence of laws and regulations on the most insignificant things. No wonder people don't respect them : if you had to play by every rule of the book you'd need a blood test to be granted the right to breathe and an accreditation from the Interior ministry to take a dump (not practical if you really must take it coz you're likely to wait a long time). I wonder how many are observing the new legislation regarding the ban on smoking in public areas btw. Not that I don't agree with it, though.

- Cellphone mania. Whoever invented cell phones must have had the Italian consumer in mind. Apparently we have the highest rate of cell phones pro capita with Japan. That's all well and good, but I doubt the usually reserved Japanese will shout so loud while using it as to give severe migraine to anyone standing at a distance less than 5 meters ("DOVE SEI?????" i.e. "Where are you??" Which generates an equally enthusiastic "MA VAFF..." on my behalf).

- Dietrologia . Literally "behindology". The instinctive distrust for what is being told you, the systematic belief that everything must be part of a grander scheme that is being hidden to you. While this is a good attitude for keeping what's left of our political élite in check and highly entertaining when it comes to football conversations, it can also tend to become pathological and counterproductive.

- Last but not least : esterofilia , or the Italians' love for everything foreign. Foreign music, foreign food (yes, even that, talk about blindness), foreign brands of everything , whatever. If it comes from abroad or at least has an exotic name, it has to be cool. And nevermind if the way they pronounce the thing would have them laughed at by a national of said foreign place. The most irritating example is the invasion of foreign TV hosts who receive standing ovations for muttering a few words in Italian (see Oliver Hardy's grandaughter who used to run her own show on national TV despite being as dumb as my left foot and virtually impossible to understand). More generally, it's the Italians' incapacity to realize how good they have it compared to most of the rest of the world that gets me upset.

HOLLAND

- Crowdedness: With well over 500 people per square kilometer, there is no place in the entire country where you can go without meeting other people. The frustration and intolerance born out of this phenomenon (which causes major traffic jams, waiting lists in the health sector etc) has been proven to increase crime rates in the entire country, especially murder.

- Ignorance: Rather than tolerating each other through understanding; the Dutch have a habit of ignoring each other. Many people don't even know their neighbours' names and this phenomenon goes as far as that the different groups in society (muslims, christians, immigrants, locals etc) are living completely parallel to each other within the borders of the same nation without knowledge of and thus respect for one another.

- Justice: Dutch laws are famous for their liberal characteristics. Sadly this has also been brought to other types of legislation which should be strict such as murder penalties. A life sentence results into only 20 years in jail maximum in practice due to a long list of softening circumstances.

- Crime: Crime rates are high and the justice system is too soft. Organised crime has been largely tackled but with minor penalties only to small crimes such as robbery, a house or a car is never safe.

- Pollution: Caused by the dense population and a high amount of cars, air pollution is worst in Holland than in any other nation in Western Europe and has caused the life expectancy to fall to three years less than in surrounding nations with lungcancer rates going through the roof.

I'm going to wait for Paul or someone to do ours.. I couldn't do it justice. Complete lack of control over the immigration system, the ridiculous benefit system that allows pregnant teenage delinquents to sit at home doing bugger all and get paid more than we do for working... ooh it makes your blood boil just thinking about it. Obsession with celebrity - thats another one, and pollution.. the list is endless

I can't even begin to tell you how America is internally and externally f^%#ed up. But you are undoubtedly more than well aware of the externals.

Internally, without diving into the details, here's a quick hit list:

- pervasive Puritan roots haven't been shaken after 300+ years (i.e., the "you can kill them, just don't show them naked" thing)

- insular and narrowminded thinking and a disconnectedness with everything that surrounds them; internally as well as relative to their place in the rest of the world (and geographical ignorance plays no small part)

- money and consumerism as an ends rather than a means

- over-regulation; in particular, that to protect stupid people

- an inability to recognize the role of/need for self-sacrifice

We keep selling all of our oil in Alberta to the States, as well as our hydro power. They (the provincial government) then have the nerve to make us pay outrageous hydro prices and tell us to conserve more. Piss off already.

Too many people take advantage of the federal government's welfare system. Also, Canada is too welcoming, and we've been known to harbour hundreds of terrorists.

Life in prison is 25 years. That's quite ridiculous. Also, I'm not sure you guys are familiar with the Paul Bernardo/Karla Homolka deal (there will be a movie released in the U.S. with Donna from "That 70's Show), but the justice system is absolutely absurd. The system is releasing this dangerous woman (Karla assisted in the rape and murders of three teenage girls with Paul Bernardo) back into the streets under a different identity. Bullshit. The whole justice system is upside-down.

Canada is made up of 30 000 000 people, and about 60-65% of those originate from somewhere other than the British Isles. Several people of one background hold grudges towards others of a different one, for example the hatred Croatians have for Serbians or the Italians have for anyone who isn't Italian. I've even seen people get knived in my city (largely European) when playing soccer or watching it. These people can't accept the fact that they are united as Canadians now and those grudges should be left back in their homelands. Sure, it is one thing to embrace your culture and background, and that's what makes Canada what it is. But when it's taken to the extent of violence, that is when it becomes unacceptable.

There's much more, but I'm too lazy. I probably shouldn't be complaining because I live in a free nation, but still, some of this shit touches a nerve with me. :D

The 1st 2 points r not that serious in Singapore though, but 1 thing that I can't really stand is that the ppl r inconsiderate.

Inconsiderate - Ppl juz don't spare a thought for others, when u move down the elevator, ppl juz block the way without giving way to others who maybe in a rush. As a result, the ppl stannding on the elevators leading to the exit of the train systems r always packed. And some ppl juz walk slowly talking to each other slowly without even thinking of giving way to other ppl. And the worst thing is they can occupy the whole pavement.

Blindness - Ppl r blinded by the media, especially in the music section. They juz follow whatever the media gives them, which explains y the songlists r almost the same in every home that I go to. U can hardly find a home of a teenager with an entirely different songlist. The worse is, I don't find the songs nice to listen to. It's juz too "pop", yet ppl enjoy it, without paying any attention to the music + lyrics. U can say that they have been brainwashed by media. Ironically, local Sg artistes went to China to develop, with 1 singer even has his 1st ever concert there. I can dare say that I'm only 1 of the few teenagers ard that attack Japanese music.

SWEDEN:

-Taxes: Way too high, highest in the world, and still LOUSY hospitals and stuff. You can wait for years before you can be operated sometimes. and there isnt enough doctors. The waiting time before you can see the doctor is at least 5 hours...

-Laws and Punishment: This is really shameful. Someone can kill a guy and walks free afters a few years. Someone can rape a girl and he is free after like 2 years...

-Alcohol: Systembolaget has monopoly of the booze here in Sweden and its expensive, only ppl above 20 can buy booze legally here.

-How we treat elders: Sweden really sucks with this. The elder care is really B A D. I think elders should be respected and not stomped on.

-The weather: Here in Gothenburg is really bad. At summer it's okay, but most of the time it rains. Especially at winter. It's really RARE with a white christmas. And it is spring until december... hhahaha!!

i laugh everytime they say " a dangerous offender has been released in this community, authorities think he is likely to reoffend"

and most of the times we are talking about child molestors here

also, people dont give a shit about the speed limit, you actually feel like a moron when you dont go over the speed limit here

also here you have to extra carefull because you dont wanna offend ANYBODY, religious, non-religous, gays, bis, trans, and kind of person, my high school team whose colours are red had to change the name from Redmen to something else, because someone pointed out that natives might get offended.

also in canada we worry too much about what others think of us, esspecially the US.

We have pretty much the opposite problem. Outside the cities at least, everybody knows everything about everybody. As an outsider, I was under the impression that this indifferent attitude on behalf of the Dutch had more to do with their "huisje, hondje, bompje" philosophy, which is quite laudable in itself IMO, rather than plain ignorance. I might be wrong of course, and it is true that despite the many cultures it contains, the Netherlands are not exactly a melting pot. More of a salad bowl in fact. Correct me if I am wrong btw, but don't you guys allow the creation of Islamic madrasses on Dutch soil, which are essentially financed by the Saud family and on which the national gov't has little influence and scrutiny? I could be confusing you with Canada though.

That's odd. I thought that one of the main traits of Americans was precisely that : the will to do what it takes to "go and get it".

One thing you should get rid of though is the pervasive "sue culture", i.e. "I put my dog into the microwave and it died. There wasn't any mention about microwaves killing animals on the instructions leaflet though. Oh I know : I'll sue the microwave company!"
