WASHINGTON (AP) - Newly-released e-mails show former FEMA director Michael Brown discussing his wardrobe during the crisis caused by Hurricane Katrina.

A House panel has released 23 pages of internal e-mail offering additional evidence of a confused and distracted government response to Katrina, particularly from Brown, the former head of Federal Emergency Management Agency, at critical moments after the storm hit.

The e-mails show that Brown, who had been planning to step down from his post when the storm hit, was preoccupied with his image on television even as one of the first FEMA officials to arrive in New Orleans, Marty Bahamonde, was reporting a crisis situation of increasing chaos to FEMA officials.

"My eyes must certainly be deceiving me. You look fabulous — and I'm not talking the makeup," writes Cindy Taylor, FEMA's deputy director of public affairs to Brown on 7:10 a.m. local time on Aug. 29.

"I got it at Nordstroms," Brown writes back. "Are you proud of me? Can I quit now? Can I go home?" An hour later, Brown adds: "If you'll look at my lovely FEMA attire, you'll really vomit. I am a fashion god."

A week later, Brown's aide, Sharon Worthy, reminds him to pay heed to his image on TV. "In this crises and on TV you just need to look more hardworking ... ROLL UP THE SLEEVES!" Worthy wrote, noting that even President Bush "rolled his sleeves to just below the elbow."

Some lawmakers immediately decried the e-mails.

The e-mails "depict a leader who seemed overwhelmed and rarely made key decisions," said U.S. Rep. Charlie Melancon, D-La. He criticized Brown for addressing "superficial subjects — such as Mr. Brown's appearance or reputation — rather than the pressing response needs of Louisiana and Mississippi."

Dont mean to ignore the issue, but just wanted to mention that its already been beaten to death. Brownie is out, Fema's gotten a lot of flak, as has our President. Nothing else is gonna change.

Fabiana would you say Chavez was a good leader?
Yes. It cant be denied that he has that something needed to "move the masses" and thats how he got to the power. Also he came in a time where the country had been democratically governed by the same people for forty years and people were starting to get tired. On the other hand, most of the (poor) people in this country are ignorant so thats why they accept Chavez's ideas. Do I agree with his ideas? No. Do I agree with the way hes ruling the government? No. There has been a lot of things about him that arent out in the international public eye.
He's making a smart move my allying with other South American countries because thats what Bolivar (the guy who freed most countries of South America/Chavez's role model) wanted to make out of South America, but I think its stupid to bash the United States because all Venezuela can rely on is oil and the USA buys 80% of that oil. If one day the Americans decided to not buy oil from Venezuela ever again (no that its gonna happen) Venezuela would be deeply screwed.

Actually attacking the US was a shrewd political move. He cant praise the US, because if ever Venezuela and the US become allies, Venezuela will be the weaker partner because of US's political and economic strength. By trading barbs, he keeps constant tension between both countries.

Most politicians know that no matter what Bush/Chavez say to each other, the oil connections will still be there because both countries need each other.

Do you think people got tired of the democratic Venezuela due to corruption?

your take on him was a lot harsher when you were posting in the US. Are you scared of the federales :D

No way! Its gotten to the point that I cant even go out because of him. At least in America I could do whatever I wanted.
Chavez sucks and I hope he dies. Instead of making this country better he made it worse.

Lol btw Chavez is trying to approve a law that will ban certain websites decided by the government to all computers connected from a venezuelan network

Yeah, but corruption is even worse in Chavez's government.

Not a while ago, the US left out Venezuela in some treaties they did with other latin countries (I dont remember especifically what), but thats right America needs the venezuelan oil so Bush will have to hang on with whatever Chavez wants to say.

Chavez said that he wanted to start negotiating oil with China, which is just plain stupid. Venezuela and the US' geographical positions just make it natural for Venezuela to export oil to America and them to buy it
