Lately, while watching some CL matches, Ive started to wonder what makes a good football match.
Firstly, the teams. Its always more interesting to see a match between two teams that have good history, are known to be rivals, have good players, etc. which was the case of Barcelona - Chelsea, for example. But sometimes it can turn out to be a really boring match, like Juventus - Milan of the 2003 CL final.
Another thing that makes a match interesting is that if the two teams are fighting for something. They might be fighting for the #1 spot of their domestic league, they might be avoiding elimination in the CL, they might be wanting to go through to the next phase (Italy - Sweden of the Eurocup), etc.
I think the players can make an interesting match too. Its always nice to see an excellent defense like Milan has, but I think its even more interesting to see one (or some) player(s) creating chances or trying to attack. That reminds me of Pavel Nedved of two seasons ago. Currently, Ronaldinho. Those kind of players that when you see a football match they dont let you take your eyes away of the TV because you might miss something they do.
Also, the goals. I think goals are something that make a match more exciting. Personally, I love to celebrate goals. Maybe one match can end up 0-1 and it was an awesome match, but I always enjoy seeing matches with lots of goals. Like that time when we beat Olympiakos 8-2 (if Im not mistaken). I also like to see how players score the goals. I think Nedved scores really nice goals.

What do you people think makes a good football match?

What makes a good football match? Tension. If you care about the result, if it's all hanging in the balance, nothing else matters. After that, it's skill and style - and not just in the attack. The Euro 200 final is one of my favourite games because of the tension, the skill and urgency of the French attacks and the master-class in defending the Italian team gave. Wiltord's equaliser was a rush, Trezeguet's winner a joy. Why can't they all be like that?

Tension, exactly John. If you care about the result it will be an exciting match no matter what sort of football is being played, most of the time at least.

I dont think you need two big names to make a good football match. Yes, that helps cater to the hype factor, but besides that there's usually nothing more on offer except great respect between the two teams and neither is comfortable going at the other. There's always more excitement when there's a clear underdog and clear favourite, because it seldom ever turns out that way. And above all, the number one ingredient required for a beautiful game is a knockout situation imo. No other situation defines urgency as this one does.

The ingredients:

Two teams with excellent players, of which one:
1) is already in a comfortable position and can play freely;
and the other:
2) has to fight to survive or go through to the next phase

Mix it together in an appealing competition and you get:

The Czech Republic vs. Holland on Euro2004

A good match for me would be a match of pure physial and mental strength. A match where both teams need to do or die, under pressure and HAVE and WILL give their all out for that particular match.

If it's your team in action then tension will make the game very exciting, like Juve - Real on Wednesday, but from a neutral point of view I prefer to watch a match with two attacking teams with good technical players both in need of a high scoring win. The situation that the two teams find themselves in is key if you're looking for entertainment. I'd hardly fancy watching two defensively sound teams lock horns if 0-0 would be enough for both sides to progress.

I think balance is the best thing. I've watched games whom people claim was 'entertaining' where there were a lot of goals and space, but sometimes I just dont fancy that as it seems too easy - I also like moments where great defence is shown and defenders do a great job in tackling and closing down on their opponent. I guess I'd like a 50-50 match of attack and defense.

That hardly ever happens. If both teams are in a situation where they have too much to loose, you get Juve-Milan2003.

It's much better if only one team is in that situation. That way, the other team plays more freely and the team in need has the space to come forward too.

Ah, thats why I specifically said both teams WILL give their all out - because I dont think Juventus really did against Milan, both of them could've done better.

You're probably right, but there are instances where a team just gives the game away to the more needy one.

Unless that kind of thing only happens in Malaysia ;)

I love watching a game that's END to END stuff, u know...full of action, and tension i guess. U guisse remember the UEFA cup final Liverpool vs Alaves like 3 yrs ago i think ?? Ended up bieng 5-4... that was an amazing game..it had everything! great end to end stuff.. That game was probly the best example of a perfect match, regardless if u are supporting them or not. I wasn't a Liverpool or Alaves supporter, and enjoyed the whol game.
I actually wanted alaves to win coz i hated McCalaster sooo much back then, and still do..that old fart

Tactical grit competition.... the fight to be 'spot on'.....

Thats why nowadays i like to watch chelsea more than arsenal or Man U in EPL...

thats also why Juve-Real last wed was one of thr brdt match on a long time...
