It also makes me think that people reach for common discrimination criteria -- gender, race, sexual orientation -- as a prerequisite for people being assholes to you. I remember the first time I went to Bangalore and read about people in the suburbs getting killed by elephants.

I honestly don't think so. Miami Breach (intentional misspelling) is already flooding regularly. And in Florida the soil doesn't drain as it does in other parts of the country... it's just a giant sponge with nowhere for extra water to go. It even allows water to ooze up out of the ground rather than from the shore of any body of water.

We will see mass migration in the U.S. from coastal areas in our lifetime. I am pretty sure of it, and it's already started in Miami Beach.
