I've just got news that my godbrother has been killed last night when he was hit by a truck while cycling in Serbia. Man, it just wont stop with that family. He was in a coma after a car crash 5 years ago, three years ago his mother passed away from cancer and now this. I have no fucking idea what to say when I call his sister and brother. I'm wrecked by this, completely.
My condolences.

Obviously I'm a bit young to be giving advice on such matters, but my experience is that it doesn't really matter what you say. Building up the courage to call and showing that you are willing to make such a difficult phonecall is all that is relevant.

Andries is spot on. There's nothing you can say that will be able to make them feel better. The best you can do is to reach out to them and be there for them and show you care.

@ßöмßäяðîëя

I missed discussion this while I was traveling overseas and had my password refused, locking me out of posting on the forums for a while. :D

Great on the MBA. The nice thing about that is that it will offer you flexibility -- so you can transition into other roles. A friend of mine used to be an IT tech at my company when I worked with him back in the day. He was good technically, and grew a lot since then. But once he got his MBA, suddenly people realized he knew how the business could work too, etc. The guy ended up becoming CIO of Starbucks, EVP and President of Best Buy, and is now a major mucky-muck at X (aka Google [x]).

The IT/health care thing is desperately needed. The good news for you, which is also a little bad, is that historically healthcare IT is the retarded and deformed bastard child of the industry. They were driven by clueless hospital administrators and doctors and lagged most of society by about 15 years.

Today that's changed. It's actually one of the unspoken improvements brought about by Obamacare: the effort to better digitize the industry from health care records to online services to in-hospital functions. It's still a step behind the cutting edge stuff in Silicon Valley per se -- and some of that has to be due to regulatory channels -- but it's catching up and it's a great opportunity for someone who knows a few things to really show everyone how it should be done. Good luck at that...
Is that even a good thing?

I personally find it demoralising. You're seeing politicians with economics degree, IT engineers with a business of administration degree and even historians work as lawyers (@Seven :D) or some other area.

Sure, you'll always find somebody who'll adept into the new role but what's a point of the previous studies that took 3-4 years?

Well, if you want mobility it's a good thing. For example, I like the engineering roles I have. But if I wanted to be more of a COO type or something like that, an MBA is a very helpful (but not always required) way to do that. If you are happy staying in your area, it's otherwise a lot of wasted time and money.

Some flexibility is fine I guess. But I've been seeing too many different/new roles. It just seems people are getting jobs without any expertise whatsoever cause people apparently only focus at the MBA degree while ignoring the previous years of studies.

I'm into engineering right now but I don't think it's what I want to do in the future. Also thinking of going for my masters. What would you say is a good subject?

If you want to sound like you can understand a financial balance sheet and understand how a business makes money in addition to the technology supporting it, that can be a powerful combination that can open doors.

But yeah, some are a little too quick to nod to the MBA degree without much else behind it too. Depends on the management of the company.

Depends on which direction you might want to go next. An MBA is a common route and allows you to branch out into other areas of business operations. But then if you told me you'd be interested in doing more in technology law, for example, an MBA wouldn't make sense.

I'm thinking of sticking with quality. Maybe a consultant position when I'm older. A pretty sweet job would be to write ISO standards for Boeing or another big company like that.

Thank you guys. I called his sister last night and it went as those things go, I suppose.

Turns out it was a hit and run, they just arrested the piece of shit.

I sve vise cujem i vidim takvih stvari.

Tuzna prica. A u vecini slucajeva se desi jer je neko drkao telefon, pricao, bio pijan... koliko ljude ustvari zabole kurac za sve ostalo/e oko njih.
