As someone who's always found it difficult to let go of people even if they treat me badly, let me tell you my eventual choice to do so was one of the best ones I've ever made. It allowed me to replace them with new friends who are genuine and actually like being with me.
I have no problem letting go. But it's tough to find replacements. School life and early childhood is a great basis for friendship. But after that, I'm not sure if I can't find a bond that's as strong.

Yeah, it can definitely be harder when you get older. I only still keep in touch with a few friends from childhood and the rest are from work, internet, mutual friends etc. But some of my closest friends are people who I've only known for a few years or less, so it's possible.

Replacements are worth it. You'll find looking back that you were just biding time with the other "friends".

But as Ragazza says, it gets harder to make new friends as you get older. The slight upside to that is a lot of people also seem to know this as they get older -- so they at least recognized the challenge even if they don't do enough to follow through and act on it. ;)
