It is an excuse. And even if it's really a factor in what happened (can't be sure with dishonest people to begin with), it's not like she's never drinking again. Drinking always makes people do what they really want to do always, just without the inhibitions of better sense.

We had some guy kidnap a 15yo just recently. They caught her cell signal around Hungary.
She was missing for like 10 days. In the end they found the guy who confessed he killed her and led police to the place where he buried her. Judging by his words he took her out of car, ran her over and then while she was still alive he started punching her and in the end strangled her to death. The guy who did it had around 120kg while she had less than 50. Later on it turned out that he also raped her.
While he was telling the story the showed no sign of remorse. For some people it's too soft to give them a death sentence as that's like a good path for them.
