I feel there should be a system whereby you still get the infraction, but only half as many points for it, if your abuse has some truth in it.

I have to agree though, I'm a mod on another forum & we don't even use the points system. We just make notes on the severity of what the person did, their history, etc and base the type of punishment off that. Then again, the rules are much stricter there than here, so it evens out.

And yeah, when something posts something completely idiotic & someone replies "you're an idiot", it's technically still an insult, but you can also argue that the person had it coming. I can definitely say I've been a lot more lenient toward people who reply that way to unintelligent or troll posts than people who insult unprovoked (just because they disagree or don't like the person).

It's also really unfortunate when you are obliged to infract a post that has just given you a good laugh.
