So does everyone else. If you do intend to do something like international relations it is obviously a good idea to speak more than one. Not great as a major, but often very attractive in a job candidate.
IR is vastly oriented towards the english language, my German is useless in the field :frown:

That is surprising. I was really shocked how often I used my French when I worked in England, and I only worked on a minor research project for the Department of Health, so I imagined people who actually deal with other countries might use it more.

In my current one, and in my research, knowing as many as possible has been really helpful.

Well I've used my German to engage in international relations, but not the academic kind :D


Yeah, It's sooo Western-centric though, to the extent that even critics have to engage in English, IIRC there are more IR course at international (english) universities than native language unis.

I suppose it does rather have to decide on one language to go forward in, as it creates too many potential holes if you have material floating around in other languages. My stuff no one gives a shit about, so you have to translate it yourself ;)
