I am too familiar with Steve Vai too, who is like Satriani Senior.

But I like the term "wankery".

Like the piano piece. Now he's maybe not as repetitive noodling as Philip Glass, which a friend of mine is really into (and I'm good friends with a relative of his). And he's certainly a lot more poppy. But I'm a big fan of Ludovico Einaudi (e.g., ). Einaudi is all about the expressive art and none of the showing off.

And he's a Torino boy too.

Oh Vai is more than Satriani senior. But if you look past the wankery, you'll see that he truly has a uniqueness about him that really stands out while playing. I admit that it's sort of an acquired taste. But you simply can't dismiss him as a show off. There are guitarists worse than him. Michael Angelo Batio and Yngwie Malmsteen come to mind.

Oh, and have you heard of Eric Johnson? He's one if my favorite guitarists too.
