Magnitude 6.3 quake strikes off Japan: USGS
WASHINGTON | Wed Mar 9, 2011 2:11pm EST
(Reuters) - A magnitude 6.3 quake struck off the eastern coast of Japan's main island of Honshu less than a day after a strong quake in the same place triggered a tsunami warning, the U.S. Geological Survey reported on Wednesday.
It said the quake, centered 126 miles east of the city of Sendai, struck at 4:44 a.m. on Thursday (1844 GMT on Wednesday). It was very shallow, only 1.2 miles deep, and was in the same area as a magnitude 7.2 that triggered a tsunami advisory on Tuesday but caused no damage or injuries.
