I actually find it pretty commonplace, really. I mean, maybe it ain't gay sex per se, but Bessie Smith? Comon! "Put a little sugar in my bowl"?! Hello! And that shit was in the prudish 1920s.
Yea but Bessie Smith wasn't marketed at mainstream a.k.a. white Americans. Since she was black, her music was considered "race music" so she could get away with recording songs like "empty bed blues" since most white people would never have listened to it anyway. And the fact that she (or her lyrics at least) was straight certainly helped.

Little Richard was of course black too, but since he came a few years later it was considered acceptable to listen to his music as long as only Pat Boone performed it on tv.
