How many days are u in beijing for? And do u have a local travelling with you?

Of all the cities i have been to,not just in china, beijing is the best of all...it just a whole lot of tradition and new mixed in a blender.
What kind of places/experience are u looking for?

I will get a night train from Xi'an and then stay 4 nights and then get a night train to Shanghai.

I really want to find the best Peking Duck in china, i have been told its in Beijing (for the obvious reason) but i forgot the restaurant. Aside from that i just want to check the place out and see the sights. How far is The Great Wall? and if its far is it worth over nighting there?

If u take a train from xian then you will arrive at Beijing Xī [west] Railway station. As soon as u come out buy a map of beijng for around 5 yuan [its all in english]
Have u allready booked the hostel/hotel you are going to stay in?
If not, just take a cab to "zhaolong hotel"....or right in front of the station exit there is a bus stand, bus no 105 will take u to the metro station from where u can take a metro to "dong si shi thiao"...then take a cab/bus 115,117,221 to "zhaolong fangtian"...their youth hostel is placed in the the most convinient part of the city, the famous "bar street" is within walking distance of this youth hostel, the rooms are all AC and get a single one for just 3 $....the corridors on 4th and 5th floor is known for sightings for nude travellers when they return drunk at night or head to the shower hungover in the morning :p
The hostel also take cares of all the travelling u need to do in beijng if u opt to.
Great wall, well, from beijing there are 4 different parts of the great wall you can visit, most of the foreigners opt for "Badaling wall" because it is completely renovated and has good toilets. But there is a part of great wall which is still preserved in its old form and is deep into jungle and mountains...the bus drops you 5 kmtrs from the wall and u have to trek/find you way to the wall...choose that over Badaling part of the wall.
Peking duck : look at the place called "white pagoda" on the map....its a lake surrounded by restaurants famous for their Bi jou [wine] and beijing duck.
When u take the sub way look the the stop "xi'Dan"....get of at either east or west and walk the street from east or west stops....

Must not miss place..."Suzie Wong" nightclub, absolutely wicked place.

Wangfujing street is very very nice at night and good cheap traditional shopping

I fucking hope there internet checks arent as stringent as i have been led to believe....i could be in trouble lol. Btw my plans in the US are changing. I cant be bothered to spend two months there, so i am going to fly straight from LA to Washington and then travel up to NY for a week and then go up to Boston and Cape Cod, then back to NY to go home. Would i still be able to catch up with you guys on that route?

It depends when I can change my flight out of ny to and when my gf can get to ny. Nothing is concrete until I change my flights. From what I Remeber you are near Washington? So I will probs do a day at the smithsonian museums and then a day look at the monuments/gvt stuff. But will have 2 days spare if on my rough plan if you aren't too far away? (I usually do 4 days per city 2 inside, 2 in surrounding area). Unless there is anything special like Hanoi or Beijing. Are there any local sports venues to you? I really want to go to an amerian stadium and watch a game of something, get drunk and be obnoxious...you know the American dream?

    We aren't too far away.

We have minor league baseball out the ying-yang, nearby. DC United. But it will be summer time so most of the sports will be limited to baseball and NASCAR. I don't know if you're interested in seeing sites that may not be in Lonely Planet.
