The guys at work actually did statistical predictions and they concluded that:

- Mexico will win vs. South Africa because on opening games historically the host has more losses than wins.
- Germany will at least get to the semis because historically they've gotten very far.

Even UBS's quants wrote a program to figure out who would win the 2006 World Cup, and the winner was the Czech Republic.

So for tournaments like these you can't really rely on statistics.
