When the U.S. plays some Central American team on home soil and sees itself outnumbered 5:1 in supporters in the stands, it's not because all those people are Honduran or Guatemalan citizens in this country illegally. Even if Arizona wants you to believe that.

Those national identities, even if past or through ancestry or whatnot, give people clique identities within broader contexts. Look at Spain, for example. Even with Euro 2008, you could still make the argument that being Catalan or Basque is far more important than some Spanish identity.

I think the piece that Andy might be missing is that it's human nature to want to belong to some subset or clique. America is too broad of a melting pot for many to always identify with so closely. Hence why the terms Mexican-American, Italian-American, Ukrainian-American, etc., etc. Whether it's a street gang in West Side Story, North Siders vs. South Siders in Chicago, or a U.S. citizen cheering for Honduras when they're playing USA in Columbus, OH, there's a human psychological need to identify with a niche social affinity.

Pretending that doesn't exist, even as illogical as it may seem, is a bit of a naive way to look at the world. Supporting a club or an NT always involves some form of personal identity. And those definitions of identity don't always start and end with a passport.
That's why I said I understand the mentality behind it. I don't always respect it, especially when someone claims to be an Azzurri fan yet doesn't know who De Rossi or Buffon are.

I'm with you on that. I understand why.

But I don't respect it either. I think street gangs are stupid, for example.

But I overthink things, of course. Which is where I side with Andy on this issue. :D

Historic and cultural reasons.

In short, i care little about the newly imposed geographic borders between Arab countries, despite the lines they draw in maps and atlases i consider myself to be Arab first and foremost, and would cheer and support for any other Arab country if it were in the WC.

I won't lie and say that i would support Algeria just like i would support Libya, but you can consider that to be like rooting for your city over other cities.

So you would support any Arab nation? Or are there Arab nations you despise?

For me I tend to support the CONCACAF nations, except Mexico.:D

I wish! But I know I will at some point soon -- if I live that long. ;)

And the great thing about being on these forums for so long, you can always point to posts in the past to show what you were up to then:

Basically, I stayed in Gurgaon for a few weeks but toured Delhi, Agra, etc., and almost made it out to Jaipur before things blew up back then:

(OK, these are posts in the Nick Against The World thread...)

That women in your avatar is hawt Andy. Who is it?
Mandy Drury, CNBC.

I don't understand why you have to be neutral when other nations play, Andy.

I like Italy more than New Zealand, so I'm rooting for Italy in that game.
You don't have to be neutral But you can't be a supporter of a nation you have no ties to as it makes absolutely no sense no matter what way you spin. That is my view, and I will never change it.

I'm not "missing" anything. I understand those cliques can exist.

But if you're some retard from Nebraska who supports the Azzurri without having any ties to the country, you're a fucking retard. That's it. Game over.

And lets be honest here. If the US was a super-power in football, you wouldn't see so many Italian-Americans, Mexican-Americans, what have you, cling to the Azzurri or their grandad's NT. That's why you see the likes of Vinni supporting our olympic athletes over anybody else, but when it comes to football, he makes fun of our side.

So fuck that bullshit.

Damn you Greg! I don't have access to it. I've been here long enough. One of these days, one of you will have to provide me the password
Never been to North India myself, but I've heard a lot of good things about that side of India. I'm sure you enjoyed yourself. I'm planning to take my bike out to the north before this year is through.
I'm sure you'll thoroughly enjoy Kerala too... Great place to vacation...
