This: (believe it or not, this is the short version.

The City of Ranson is developing plans for a nature park that includes hiking trails and observation platforms in a natural area at the headwaters of Flowing Springs Run. The park is located along the Route 9 bypass next to the new Home Depot in Ranson, WV. The park is 29 acres, and will include an additional 8 acre parcel soon to be annexed from Charles Town Races. The City of Ranson has partnered with several local agencies to plan the functions of the park. These partners include: the Potomac Valley Audubon Society, the WV Div. of Forestry’s Urban Forestry and Chesapeake Bay Offices, and the West Virginia Conservation Agency. The partners, along with other members of the community, developed a vision statement that included the need to identify and eradicate invasive plant species.

Intern Aaron Molenda will be providing the following services:

Identify and inventory the invasive plants (woody and herbaceous) on the 29-acre site, plus the 8 acres that will be annexed shortly. These plants will include but are not limited to mile-a-minute weed, ailanthus/tree of heaven, Johnson grass, Multi-flora rose, Autumn olive, Wineberry, Honeysuckle, Thistle, garlic mustard, Japanese barberry and others.
Provide a general overview of the presence and identification of invasive plants found on neighboring properties.
Using GPS, map the sites where each invasive is found.
Research best practices for invasive removal/control, taking into consideration the proximity to Flowing Springs Run, and make recommendations to the City of Ranson, PVAS, and the WV Div. of Forestry, to build into a land management plan.
Provide all information gathered, to the City of Ranson, PVAS, WVDOF.
Include the map of invasive plants and best practice recommendations, utilizing Early Detection Rapid Response (EDRR) criteria:
What is the species of concern, and has it been authoritatively identified?
Where is it located and likely to spread?
What harm may the species cause?
What actions (if any) should be taken?
Who has the needed authorities and resources?
Provide an invasive plant report to the center for Invasive Species and Ecosystem Health for use in the Early Detection and Distribution Mapping System.
If time allows in the internship, Aaron will help manage some of the invasive plant species such as pulling mile-a-minute or cutting ailanthus.
Note: For my research project I will be examining possible correlation in the frequency of invasive plant species found in different environmental settings such as field and forest, or wet and dry environments.
