Wondering why the religious discussion has taken over the forum and why do some members take it as a mission to discuss religion.
Whew, it's not just me thinking that death-by-religious-poll suddenly became our new forum raison d'être... :shifty:

Morning blondu... you should try and get some sleep...

Andy, how is the Islamic banking system being accepted in the U.S.? I think there are more than a few organisations which offer the option of banking under such a system... and how is it holding up in the current economic condition? (You are the resident stock expert, like how Ze is the resident aviation expert :D)

P.S. This is not a religious discussion.. purely business :D

I'm not that familiar with Islamic banking, but I do know it's forbidden to charge interest on loans. Obviously, common folks would absolutely love not having to pay back interest. It would also mean that the horrible Federal Reserve bank wouldn't be able to exist, because we are perpetually paying back interest to them for every note they print. Getting rid of them would be fantastic.

But it's difficult to have a healthy financial system without banks making profits. And if I assume correctly, Sharia law also prohibits gambling or stock trading, so I don't know if I'd want strict Islamic banking to takeover. Seems to me it would limit prosperity.

And I am not an expert, btw. :D Canardo is the expert here.

Shariah does prohibit gambling but not all aspects of stock trading. I am not really aware of all the rules and stuff, but I read somewhere that Islamic banks has been making very good profits in the past few years... so I decided to ask the person who plays raquetball and then spends time watching the stock markets (crash :p)

Edit: I wanted to post a quote from director of the American Center for Democracy regarding her views on Islamic banking, which is not pretty.. But I fear this discussion would be hijacked by the religious fanatics (Martin, Seven, DPFL etc.) of this forum :D

"The essentials of Islamic Banking, such as prohibition of any kind of “speculation” and of interest charges, as well as of “immoral” investments such as in casinos are discussed. Islamic banks have to make a profit. They do this by buying assets on behalf of the customer, who has to repay the “loan” and a fee for using the asset. When the “loan” is paid off, the asset’s ownership is transferred to the borrower. The advantage of this arrangement is that the bank shares not only the profit but the risk as well. For that reason, it will also have a very close look at the potential borrowers. - Islamic financing appears to have done better than Western capitalism in the Asian and present financial crises."

Seems like those banks didn't partake in the Wall Street Ponzi scheme of credit default swaps, so no wonder why they're doing okay.
