Probably because the damn NFL games take forever and you have to stand up and go buy beer 10 times spending over $100 for it.
That's something I always found weird. NFL is spectacular to watch. I like it because it combines so many things. There's speed, sheer power and skill, but then again tactics are so important as well.

But what is odd is that you have a game that is basically divided into short plays, yet takes forever.

It doesn't have to take that long, but commercials every other play take up the time.

This is why soccer isn't as big in the US as it should be - they can't stand how there's no prolonged stoppage in play.

Wait a minute.

The game is actually stopped for the commercials? I see very NFL games obviously, but I always assumed the commercials were there to fill natural pauses.

Nah they have built in stoppages just for commercials. It doesn't take that long to move the yard marker chains around and manipulate the field. If you watch the game closely if the game is close you don't see as many commercials during the last 2 minutes as the team is trying to work quickly to come back, something known as the two minute drill.
