Do you referee the game properly, or do you go easy on them since they are young?

Over here refs won't book anyone until it is 15 or 16 year olds.
I am a beginner as well and today was my sixth match. Not a single game I have given a card but here in Göteborg we have a zero tolerance policy which applies for swearing and racist remarks. Swearing is an automatic yellow, swearing at another player is an automatic red. Racist remarks are an automatic red and reported. Today a kid swore but his team was 7-0 down and he made a nice shot that got deflected out so I just warned him verbally.

As for normal fouls, i haven't given cards because I don't think they deserve it (yet). They DO play football and they are on the pitch to play regardless of any other factor like losing or getting bad calls.

That's cool, I didn't know you did that. No problems with aggressive parents yet? Or are the Swedes just too cool for that?

Sounds similar to here.

Dissent was about the only way that the referee would show a card.

You got that right, Swedes :D

Today I arrived there and discovered that I didn't have a pen with me, I asked a lady there and she gave me her pen. She was a parent of one of the players that lost and she said at first that the pen will give her kid an advantage. After the game I returned the pen and her reaction was:

Well, too bad the pen didn't help my son. Better luck next time.

I had to. He punched a kid and pulled his hair because another kid ran into him and knocked him over. I did explain to him why he couldn't play the game any more and his dad told me I did a good job. I felt like crap though because really who wants to kick a little kid off the pitch?
