It sounds like a couple of things. Missing 250Gb like that suggests either a partition that can't be found/mounted, or it suggests that maybe what file system you're using to format the disk can only provide memory addressing for up to 250Gb, leaving the other half in no-mans-land. To address the last one, you can partition the drive in two using some kind of fdisk utility or format it with a file system where you can address a full 500Gb of address space.

this morning i had 270 gb free, then it dropped to 20..i started deleting things from my hard thinking that maybe it will bounce back to 200...i deleted 80g of movies, restarted but i had only 100 free instead of 350. I will going to format all hard drives soon. I had saved my music on 4 dvds so i'm safe
