Funny you should mention that. Last I was having drinks with a few former coworkers (the one whom we walked back to her car by stepping over drug addicts and running into an Amazon hooker), and she always carries a towel for those very reasons. She even had it on her.

It's not just the U.S., with things like French Fries, which the French will call Belgian at times.
It's things like "steak à l'Americaine" (blaming Americans), as it's called by the French. But which Americans call "steak tartare" (blaming Central Asians). Nobody wants to claim credit for eating raw meat.
