Busy summer??

I have always been curious to where everyone not from an English speaking country learnt to speak and write English so well on this forum.

Same here. I always wanted to open a thread, to ask non native English speakers how they learnt English.

I personally lived in Scotland for the first seven years of my life, so i always knew how to speak English.

I know the Indians learn English at school which is natural, them being a former British colony and all. But i'm curious to know about people from the Balkans?

I don't think that the prominence of English as the medium of education is because of the British colonization. I think there was a conscious support by the government for it. In fact, the govt. actually permits schools with different mediums of education. There's English, the national language of Hindi, and the local language of the state being considered. People just choose where they wanna sent their kids to.

really? The English have been in India for centuries, that must have had some impact on English being the medium of education.

Oh of course they did. But they left India 63 years ago, and since then, the Indian govt. definitely thought about how t proceed with education and its medium. Whether to abandon English and emphasize in local and national languages, or let them continue studying in English and have a better chance of doing the blah blah people usually do outside their country and gain some recognition.

...or something along those lines.
