In a series of letters, the Taliban have been reminding Afghans of the obligations of their religion. One letter warns Afghans that owning "shiny new phones" is contrary to their religious dignity. The letters have also warned young Afghans against using hi-tech gadgets like cellphones, with photography and video functions. "People with camera cellphones must not have pictures of unrelated women and handsome boys in their phones, which is against Islamic sharia (religious law)," said one letter obtained by Reuters. The letter adds that mobile phones should not have "immoral video clips" or ring tones with verses of the Koran. Such offenses would be considered a "serious crime" that would be punished severly. "People should think of their Afghan dignity rather than buying shiny phones," the letter concluded.
