It's simple: when you die, you go back to being what you were before you were born. You won't feel anything, you won't remember anything. Just silence and darkness. All the elements that gathered from around the universe to form the body that is you will dissipate back where they came from, ending this beautiful journey that is your life. A journey that began out of love.

Plus, if there IS an afterlife, think of it as a bonus.

Oh, I do say that to myself and I know that is exactly what's going to happen. But I still have a massive fear of death and my own mortality.

:agree: That would be amazing also finding other life in our galaxy, would be amazing.
I think those two are linked in some ways. For example ten years ago the notion of alien life was something that was often ridiculed. You were a moron if you believed in aliens. Today a lot of scientists consider it more likely for there to be alien life than not to be (on the very reasoning I figured out as a 10 year old - it's not exactly brain surgery, not sure why it's only accepted now).

That also means that there is nothing special about life on Earth. You just need certain conditions for life. If we can accurately figure those out and actually see evidence of alien life a whole lot of notions would have to change.

:agree: I never understood why people were so against the idea of it, denying it. Its merely a question of odds, with how big and unknown space is the odds are that there is definitely life out there. I wonder, if we find other life what that means for religion, do they just say God made them as well? :D

Thought that in scientific circles it was always seen as more probable that some sort of alien life exists, at least since the 70es or so?

Also, I haven't seen a single piece of evidence that would mean that we aren't simply the product of some random chain reaction of atoms and subatoms that for some reasons thinks it has a conscience and is more than a cluster of carbon atoms reacting in, I admit, pretty spectacular ways. Meaning and purpose in a spiritual sense are concepts devised entirely by mankind, any higher, superimposed meaning of life would be an oxymoron in itself imo.

Of course only with what we know so far, but that should be a given in any discussion anyways.

You could try to say that angels from above are indications of alien life or some bullshit. You could always come up with something. There are many scientific errors in the Bible and the Quran and both Islam and Christianity have survived so far. But this only goes so far. Look at the average high school kid in Europe/USA/Australia: it's pretty likely that he/she is not believing any of that crap. Which is why I think in another 20-30 years mainstream religion will be dead and buried.

Maybe so, but you were ridiculed if you said it out loud. Now it is normal.

:agree:

There are still a lot of young people that are religious however, mainly people that are kids of immigrants from asian countries, some euro countries, African countries as well as the Arab ones.

Oh it's definitely not dead yet. Just look at how often God is mentioned by American celebrities. But it is dying.

Not too sure about that.

On a global scale for example, religious populations are growing demographically, while countries where atheism is prevalent are stagnating or declining population-wise.

I just don't see it having good chances of survival in an increasingly scientific and technological society.
