out of interest, how does it feel, as someone born in ireland, to have st patricks day as a global event?
It's great if you happen to be traveling and the country you are in recognises the day. Unfortunately, in most foreigners eyes it's seen as a day to celebrate alcohol and it can be accused of enforcing the drunken Irish stereotype. It's kind of similar to Halloween as a holiday I guess, in that it's original purpose of being has been replaced by more entertaining pursuits, dressing up, socialising, drinking etc. Then again, anyone who still believes that St Patrick chased all of the snakes out of Ireland ought to stay away from the booze.

All that being said I guess that I'm proud that our little country has a day recognised as a global event, whether it be for the right reasons or not.

On a side note, I always find it funny when I see news clips of Americans celebrating the day, yet if you were to hand them a map they couldn't point the country out. Maybe if there was a leprechaun standing beside it :p

It's more the drunk thing I am talking about. I refuse to celebrate national days regardless of what they are about, stereotyping is never good, as is nationalism in all forms. I don't view myself as being of any national identity, but i know that i am viewed as british and have labels attatched to me because of it. If one of those were that I am a drunk, i'd be furious.

I have to admit that there is quite a majority of people here who do nothing to dispel that stereotype, not to the levels that the likes of the American media portray us mind you, but not a million miles away either. The fact of the matter is that there isn't much else to do here if I'm honest, the climate is terrible as are the amenities available, one usually governs the other as well.

As I mentioned before, it is a novelty when your abroad to have a day dedicated to your country of birth if sometimes for the wrong reasons. But I am quite proud of where I'm from so when the day comes around I tend to throw on the blinkers and enjoy a few pints of Guinness. :pint:

:shifty:, I didn't know that Australians were deemed to be desirable. Every australian i've met i've found to be crass, stupid and fucking annoying. And I have been there, unfortunately.

Why are you so obsessed about labels and categories?

Core to my political ideology is the belief in localised devolved parliaments coupled to supranational sovereignty (one world). Getting people to ditch national identities is the first step to a brighter future. Im not obssesed, I was interested how he felt about the world viewing ireland as a bunch of drunks - which i dont.

Don't feel bad. Society has done much the same with Christmas and every other holiday practically.

    Good song, btw.
