But this rule is better for that, dammit:

* denying the opposing team a goal by deliberately handling the ball

Why use a rule that talks about a goal scoring opportunity, when we have a rule that speaks about denying a goal by handling the ball?

And the rule you bolded says:
denying an obvious goal-scoring opportunity to an opponent moving
towards the player’s goal by an offence punishable by a free kick or a
penalty kick.

So what's an offence punishable by a free kick or a penalty kick?

These are:
Direct Free Kick

A direct free kick is awarded to the opposing team if a player commits any
of the following seven offences in a manner considered by the referee to be
careless, reckless or using excessive force:

• kicks or attempts to kick an opponent
• trips or attempts to trip an opponent
• jumps at an opponent
• charges an opponent
• strikes or attempts to strike an opponent
• pushes an opponent
• tackles an opponent

A direct free kick is also awarded to the opposing team if a player commits any
of the following three offences:

• holds an opponent
• spits at an opponent
handles the ball deliberately (except for the goalkeeper within his own
penalty area)
--------------

In every case it speaks about handling the ball deliberately.
The rules are pretty clear so I don't see why do we have to interpret them.

The only question here is what is a deliberate handball. That's not explained so it's up to the referee to decide. Rosetti decided that it was a deliberate handball and I think he was wrong.
Alen I see your point, but I'm sorry I am not a FIFA official.

I merely explained the call that was made and why the call could have been a red card. The truth is only Rosetti and his assistants know why he called it the way he did.

I'll try one more time to explain it.

First of all you must understand that this is not one call but two. As I said earlier and initial call is the handball infraction in the penalty area.

There was a handball we all agree to that. Whether it was deliberate or not is up to the referee's discretion (what he saw).

Beyond this first call we have a second issue for fouls within the penalty area.

Did the foul stop a goal scoring opportunity? Yes.

What is the penalty for such a foul? A sending off.

By the rules of the game the referee made a correct decision. Whether the rules need adjusting or handball should apply to the denying goals rule is up to debate.

*Also it must be noted that the goal scoring opportunity rule is mainly used for fouls after the last defender. Whether or not it should be included with handballs is something FIFA should consider.

Andries is correct; it is ONLY when the referee decides that it is intentional. Without intention, it is no foul, no call, no card, no penalty. IF the referee calls a handball in the box, then it is both a penalty, and, if the handball is for example stopping the ball from crossing the line, a red card.

Like I said: it's only called when it's deliberate IMO. So if he called it, he must have felt it was deliberate, in which case he had to send him off. I think Kewell knew what he was doing by the way. If it touched his arm, it was deliberate.

I don't really know why you're debating about this, because it has been like this forever.
Oh, now with this I agree. I say the same too. Rosetti won't say "I gave him a red because he stopped a goal". He will have to say that he gave Kewell a red because Kewell deliberately handled the ball.

And I say that Rosetti was wrong because Kewell didn't deliberately handle the ball. He didn't handle the ball at all actually.

And I don't think it's always been like this. I've seen tens of cases when the ref said play on after a similar or same incident.

During 2006. indeed I said that Italy should win over USA and I accepted that De Rossi got well deserved red card, but I have never insulted your national team, NEVER!!!
You said that Donovan made Cannavaro looks like MLS player and I put " " for that, you def made a mistake and by mistake mixed me with some other guy.
You've called us murderers before. You tend to blame everything that happens in the world on us, or divert attention to the US like it's a boogyman, like you did in the Pharmaceutical thread. You even said that Italy were "cheated" out of the US match.

And Donovan did make Cannavaro out to be an MLS player in that match. MLS players have done better at shutting him down in the past.

Good call by the ref on the red card but Australia did well despite it. Ghana seems to think they can cruise on by on pk shots. God, all that possession...all those chances :sergio: Muntari needs to start or come in sooner next game.

I would like to see the following teams out
France, South Korea, England, Germany, Japan, Portugal, Spain.
Why? Where is Allahabad anyway? Is it in middle east and you have hate on both of East Asian teams which qualify from Asian qualifier, and eliminated your beloved country?

True , your forces used to bomb every damn undeveloped country which regime the US officials disliked simply because the same officials had some profit there (is it oil or selling weapons no matter what). I can say that again and it is true.
Even Serbia was bombed and so many people here are suffering from the different types of cancers (which I see every day because I work in a medical field) because the USAF and used these depleted uranium bombs. God knows what is the situation in Iraq, that's what I said there at the pharm.therad...but that's another level, anyway I said that your officials are doing evil around the globe and it is not the thing I made it is a well known fact, but I have never insulted your nation, and never called you or the US citizens by the word murders, don't say that Andy because it is not truth at all.
We all know how it works Andy , your country is a superpower and I believe that many of the US citizens are against the US involvement in almost every damn war this World has but they can't change it.
As for the Italy against the US we were confronting about several issues:
1-Did Pope deserve a red card for being the last man and making foul on Gilardino
2-Gattuso scored a goal in the 1st half which was not an offside
3-Did Mastroeni deserved a red card in the 1st half
4-Did Nesta make a handball touch in the 2nd half
5-Perrotta was fouled in the second half and he was injured while we already made all 3 changes and this was not characterized as a foul at all
and several things more....but there was not a single occasion in which I have insulted your NT.

---Why you didn't answer this post? Than you're gonna ask me again to explain some things to you in few months.

Andries, can you tell me again on which matches did Italy score the 5 goals in 2002 that were disallowed?
I will look for them by my own, just tell me the matches and how many goals on each of those were disallowed.

I think the whole area of giving a penalty and a red card for an offence needs to be looked at.

Very often, a goal and the loss of a man is an unduly harsh punishment.
Not if that offense prevented a real goal chance.

I would like to see the following teams out
France, South Korea, England, Germany, Japan, Portugal, Spain.
It would make the whole competition very boring.
 So true. Like who wants to see New Zealand vs. Cameroon in the final.
