There's definitely a difference, and you're not narrow minded for thinking that way. Growing up in a big football nation and supporting that nation becomes natural and supporting a different NT becomes unthinkable. But if your NT is insignificant and rarely if ever makes it to the WC at all, I think it's just as natural to grow into supporting a different nation. It's a compromise between being a football fan and not having a strong NT to support.

Being a football fan I'm not gonna root against a great nation because I dislike them for any reason. Even if I don't neccessarily want to see England winning the WC, I don't want them to crash out early either, especially with a great match like England - Germany possible for the round of the last 16, so I don't really understand why people cheer for USA just because of their dislike for England.

Sensible post

However when talking about another national side the word 'We' should never come into the equation. First and foremost you support the country from which your born into.

Let me use me as an example.

England's Ice-Hockey team is poor. Do I support Canada? America?

England Rugby team is not too sharp either. Do I support New Zealand,Australia?

Englands Cricket team used to be shambolic- Do I support Australia,India,Pakistan

Just because you're national side is not good at one sport does'nt mean you should go off supporting another National team. That for me is weak. That for me shows you just seek glory.

Firstly I'm Irish so I actively support an insignificant team that rarely qualifies for any tournaments and I don't walk around decked out in Holland gear shrieking oranje oranje! We watch International Football because it's an extension of league football it's on huge cop out to start supporting a big NT that plays seschy football, Vichy France comes to mind.

I'll root against the nation of England every single time until they give my country back in its entirety, apologies publicly and accept all culpability for genociding my people and they shut the fuck up about 1966.

I cheer for the USA because they were considered underdogs and they aren't an arrogant ponce filled footballing nation like France or England, and Germany V Englnd would most likely be a shit 1-1 draw

Not really, atleast for me it isn't.

My national team didn't made it to the world cup but i support them nonetheless and did it over the whole qualifying process in which at the end we crashed out.

But being a football fan i wouldn't miss the world cup just because my country didn't made it and it's pretty normal for you to sympathize with at team that made it to the WC.

You can support a team for whatever reasons you see fit. In my case i support France (i like their players) and Netherlands (i love their playing style).

Getting passionate about them and boasting about their achievements aswell as crying and moaning when they lose on the other hand it's pretty senseless IMO.

I dunno, I think people have to settle those questions for themselves. I was raised with my dad supporting his Italians in everything, even if it were sports he didn't particularily cared about, so I kinda take after that.

However if I were to spend some time in New Zealand, making friends and having a connection to that Nation and culture, I could see myself supporting the All Blacks. Not because I'd be seeking glory, but because I'd know how much they cherish their team and how they'd be happy to see them win and so on.

With so many people that connection to the Italian NT is Juve, so I don't really see it as a problem.

Then why are you pissed at us supporting the USA?

Obviously not the Irish, because you know, it's our birth-right to delight in your failure.
Like I said not every English person talks about how good the National team is and how weak every other nation is. Alot of people actually respect other countries in the World Cup but unless you live over here it's hard to really form an opinion.

I don't consider Ireland to be an insignificant team and they have a very strong fan base. I more or less meant nations that never qualify and don't have a strong domestic football fanbase (no popular national league).

I actually cheered for France against Ireland. After the Irish planted bombs in Manchester and having every intention to kill the Mancunians. :p

So I hope Ireland fail in every competition they enter.

Y todo el pueblo cantó: "MARADÓ, MARADÓ",
nació la mano de Dios, "MARADÓ, MARADÓ".
Sembró alegría en el pueblo,
regó de gloria este suelo...

Olé, olé, olé, olé; Diego, Diego.
Olé, olé, olé, olé; Diego, Diego.
Olé, olé, olé, olé; Diego, Diego.
Olé, olé, olé, olé; Diego, Diego.

England Shmengland, Italy Shmitaly. Who cares about those mortals?
Stop fighting and enjoy this opportunity God gave us to watch his son again in a world cup.
