I like this confederation spots debate. Alen brought up some interesting points and so did Andy.

The main thing is that, if they didn't take one spot away from Africa for the 2010 WC why should they take one from South America? And even more so if South American sides were one of the better performers in the tournament

Spain wants imperilled Paul protected

July 09, 2010 Edition 1

MADRID: The Spanish government expressed concern yesterday for the future wellbeing of Paul, the soothsaying octopus who from his German zoo has predicted a slew of correct results at the World Cup.

Paul has made correct predictions on the outcome of all six of Germany's matches - including Wednesday's 1-0 semi-final loss to Spain - by choosing to eat a morsel of food from boxes emblazoned with the flags of the German team and its rivals.

Four times he chose the Germans and they won; twice he plumped for their rivals - and they won too.

Now Spaniards are worried the Germans may take some kind of "revenge" on the mollusc medium.

"I am thinking of sending him a protective team," joked Prime Minister Jose Luiz Rodriguez Zapatero on Radio Cadena Ser.

Prescient Paul is branching out and will weigh in on the final between Spain and the Netherlands, the Oberhausen Sea Life Aquarium confirmed yesterday.

Spain's Environment and Fisheries Minister Elena Espinosa said: "On Monday, I shall be at the European Council of Ministers and I shall be asking for a (fishing) ban on Paul the octopus so the Germans do not eat him!" - Sapa-AFP

Spain players robbed

July 09 2010 at 02:13PM

Spain players Sergio Busquets and Pedro Rodriguez were robbed ahead of their World Cup semifinal win over Germany in Durban.

Spanish media reported the players' rooms were broken into ahead of their 1-0 victory on Wednesday, with Busquets losing documents and about €800. Pedro reportedly lost about €1 000 from his safe.

Busquets said on Friday that "nobody likes to be robbed ... but I'll exchange all of my documents for the World Cup."

The Spanish federation would not comment.

Well, Pedro certainly wasn't robbed of any talent. I never understood why Spain and Barca love the guy so much. I think he's just a fan boy hack.

He will be a top player, and isn't far off of one now.

I'd bet you he will score in the final, but you'll be to skinny with the odds.
Pedro is currently 50% hype, 40% running around, and 10% useful skill. That boy should never start in a World Cup match without serious improvement.

Meanwhile, other weird fashion phenomenon here in Cape Town for the Cup:

* National arm warmers -- as if leg warmers in the 80s weren't bad enough

* National flag car wing-mirror socks

Now back to seeing if we can rent wheelchairs to get in to one of the 3-D theaters here showing the final. (The only seats left are for disabled. ;))

Looking at the individual leaders, talk about an endorsement of gay man-sex...
