The winner of Uruguay-South Korea will play in the quarters against the winner of USA- D2.

Now, if one of Serbia, Ghana or Australia finish second in group D, then we will have an unexpected semifinalist.

Girlie Man was having the best match of anyone out there. And after everyone just got stuffed by the Algerian goalie, I was saying that it would have to be Donovan to score to break the tie. Sure enough... I just didn't expect it to come so late. Say what you will about Girlie Man, but the guy delivered under immense pressure.

And Algeria played their hearts out. They should have played this match and France's matches for that matter. They missed some completely open shots, but they did themselves proud in an otherwise deadlocked, high-intensity match.
He had a good game, no doubt (I must admit I only saw some parts of the game as I was watching England as well). But I think he's very overrated. He's having a good World Cup, but his goals have come against Slovenia and Algeria. They're solid teams, true, but it's not quite the same as deciding the quarters or the semis in an epic game against Spain or Brazil. I think Dempsey's the better overall player TBH.

I'm glad the USA pulled it off though. The only thing that will no doubt annoy me is the way Andy cannot handle a win.

And I don't think there's a question about it: the USA has played three exciting games throughout the group stage. Oddly, and with all their horrible mistakes, they're the most exciting team to watch in this Cup thus far.
Stretching it too far.

They deserve to top the group, though.

Frigging ESPN SportsCenter. Top story is Lawrence Taylor's rape -- not even a player for years -- over the USA topping their World Cup group in the last minutes for the first time in history. :(

The team that didn't deserve qualification from the 6 qualified teams is...England.

Or at least, Slovenia deserved to be 2nd in their group just as much as England did.

Slovenia could have lost by a far bigger margin today and deserved to lose against the US. I don't quite see how they deserved to be 2nd. England never looked like losing a game.

And they could have also drawn today's match. Pathetic England in the second half and wasteful Slovenia. England's only good performance, and it was nothing more than ok, was today's first half. The Slovenians played such a great half against USA too and they didn't let Algeria create a single chance against them.

Both had the same performance at this world cup. England's huge expectations makes me give the edge to Slovenia as the team who deserved to qualify more.
Tbh, though, in this group only one team really deserved to qualify.

They were incredibly lucky against Algeria and the US was actually the better side for more than half the game, Slovenia were just very clinical. Today Rooney should have finished the game off.

Everyone got what they deserved.

Dempsey just couldn't finish today. Woodwork. Goalie. Offsides. Donovan was not making attempts at goal throughout the match, but did a great job setting up plays that were ultimately squandered. That's when I felt Donovan had to be the finisher.

Stretching it too far.
Portugal's 7-0 win was a thriller in terms of display, but it was not exciting as a game. The USA has played three exciting games.

It's like saying that Korea didn't deserve to go through because Nigeria lost so many chances against them. And they weren't even the better side today against England.

I feared Slovenia would bottle it. Having only watched the first half, it looked like it. They had chances in the second? Too bad, but if you don't take them....

England could go either way, continue to suck or improve - but they'll have to improve A LOT to be a serious threat.

USA played with much character in their games and I'm glad they're through because it was fully deserved. Good games to watch too.

This is so sad. 99% of this country doesn't care for the sport so there will be no celebration on the streets, cars will not be honking in their horn and waving their flag, and ffs ESPN post-game report was all but 5 minutes. So sad. These guys deserve more coverage.

It's one of the reasons why I wouldn't mind a USA exit next round. The country lacks passion for the sport and it shows. I can understand them though, there are other sports than football too...
