thats so last year...

we beat argentina and convincingly outplayed poland since then ;)
In Sweden everyone is so pleased to have England in the same group. It´s like: "we havn´t lost since -68..." I´m more like: you should be scared! If they get Lampard to work with Gerrard they will be leathal. SWP and Cole on the flanks... England is one of the candidates this time.

Yeah I think really that the Lamps-Stevie G combo is pretty much key to our fortunes. In recent games we've managed to get that right by playing a holding midfielder to complement them - which means there would unfortunately be no place in the starting eleven for either SWP or Joey Cole, though both would be interesting options from the bench.

First team I'd imagine Sven to pick if all fit and on form:

Robinson
Neville
Rio
terry
Ashley Cole
Ledley King/Michael Carrick (holding mid)
Becks
Lamps
Stevie G
Rooney
Owen

for the first time ever in a major tournament I'm actually backing us to get very very far

Actually I`m against Zlatan as a midfielder he maybe reminds a midfielder a bit but his position is quite like DP! If you remember the golden years of DP he didn`t play like a striker he went to a midfield position got the ball and then decided if he should shoot on goal or give a brilliant pass. Zlatan plays exactly like this and our team is build around him quite like it was build on DP in the past (ofcourse DP of then was better but that is another issue...)
About the scoring thing I think Zlatan`s finishing has improved from last year and it will improve more next year and maybe in a few years he would be a good finisher he is improving at each moment so I`m against Zlatan as a midfielder.
Also Zlatan quite reminds me of Henry and you all know why Henry is a striker and not a midfielder...

That will be to much jam on the cookie...
King is a great player but it is bad enough that gerrard and Lampard fights over the same surface. Get Cole and/or SWP to get the speed in. Becks is miscreded. Does very much for the team and is brilliant defensivly.

This is my 1st choice

---------------------Robinson------------------------
Neville----Ferdinand-------------Terry--------A.Cole
---------------Gerrard-------------------------------
Becks-----------------------Lampard----------------
---------------------------------------------Cole-------
---------------------Rooney----------------------------
-------------------------Owen---------------------------

You're right about Becks being good defensively but personally i still wouldn't have him in the team.. holding mid plus Gerrard and lampard gives more than enough cover for the defence.. potentially I'd like us to play a back three but thats unlikely

------------------------------Robbo-------------------------------
---------Neville(c)----------Terry------------Rio----------------
----------------------------Carrick-------------------------------
-----------Gerrard----------------------Lampard----------------
---SWP------------------------------------------------Cole-------
---------------------Rooney---------------------------------------
----------------------------------Owen----------------------------

that would be exciting to see but hard to tell how it would work out

Potentially I guess with some work Becks could play that role. Thats my only problem with your formation - Gerrard cannot play as a holding midfielder, its killing the player he is, dynamic, driving the team forward, rampaging down the flanks and through the middle, caring the opponent.

Carrick may not be internationally renowned but is having a very good season and would surprise many with his maturity in a major comp imo

That is my point.
You hav a to good team with to many offensive players and the soulution is simple. Gerrard, Lampard and Rooney fight over the same kind of balls and space. All going in the middle with their distance power shots. They have to work for eachother. Not giving that role to one single player. Instead alternate on 4. Becks, Lampard, Gerrard and Rooney. I know, it´s wierd. But if two goes forward 1 stays neutral and one goes defensive. It would give you the gold...

good in theory mate, but its not easy trying to get either of gerrard or lampard to play the holding role. They both effectively play the same role for their clubs (though gerrard has been stationed on right midfield by benitez recently) which involves being the driving force in attacks and finishing off moves. Would be hard to see them saying "you attack, its my turn to hold the fort" but like you say if we got it right we'd be favourites imo (and thats not being arrogant i would really think that)

I think it would work.
But we both know it will never happen.

So for real, how do you think England will perform this summer?

well, I've done a bit of forecasting and I reckon we're dead on to get Brazil in the semi, Argentina and maybe Italy in the other semi. Now imo we have the all round team to beat brazil, and if we can do that I reckon we'd beat any other team in the final. I'd definitely say we'll make the semis, after there its just nail-biting time.

What do you reckon to Sweden;'s chances by the way? I'd have to say i think a lot depends on the fitness and form of Henrik Larsson. He ain't getting the games at present which can't be good. On form imo he's the best finisher in world football, which is as high a tribute I can pay him really. Him and Zlatan tick up front, you'll be a handful for anyone

1. I dont think this will be Brazils WC. They will fall hard...
Remeber were you heard it first. ;)

2. England could get knocked out in the group or go for the gold. It all depends on the today form.

3. Sweden will not get that far... For the first time our problems are in inner midfield and defense. Earlier we´ve always had problems up front, this time it´s the other way around...

So who`s WC will it be?

I really do not think Ibrahimovic would excel as an attacking midfielder...whenever he is near the center circle he tends to just lounge around like the play is even dead, and I also see him making lackadaisical passes that become turnovers in the middle of the park. I see Gudjohnnson as the better passer of the two and a harder worker, something you need for that position if you dont have the best passing ability. The more I think about Zlatan playing deeper the more I just think it would be a bad idea...he would not be able to dribble as much as he would further up the pitch, and if he tries to hold the ball for too long he will undoubtedly turn the ball over in the most congested section of the pitch.

Personally I think Mutu would be better suited for this role as he works much harder and has better passing capabilities, but that's just me...plus he has also played midfield for us in the past.

Agreed, although you never know with Brazilians. England has a great squad, but they could get in trouble for not being able to play anything but 4-4-2.
True... But I have a strong feeling Brazil will fail big time this WC...

I always have that feeling. But Brazil proves that you don't need defenders or tactics to win. Then again, Greece proved that you didn't need players...
