Reports in Italy claim Internazionale are close to agreeing a deal to sign Juventus midfielder Patrick Vieira.

The France international appears likely to leave the Stadio Delle Alpi before the start of next season following Juve's relegation to Serie B.

The former Arsenal captain has been linked with a return to The Premiership with Manchester United, while Barcelona also hold an interest.

But, after signing Lilian Thuram and Gianluca Zambrotta, a third swoop on Juve from Barca appears unlikely to bear fruit.

Vieira is being tipped to join Inter, with the Nerazzurri willing to pay in the region of €13 million (£9 million) for the experienced midfielder.

Inter officials Gabriele Oriali and Marco Branca met Juve sporting director Alessio Secco on Thursday to discuss the transfer.

It is thought a deal for Vieira will be announced once the outcome of Juve's appeal against their punishment for the match-fixing scandal is known.

Meanwhile, Inter goalkeeper Francesco Toldo has expressed his delight at signing a contract extension tying him to Giuseppe Meazza until 2008.

Toldo said: "There were clubs who looked for me, but the club officials have always refused their offers and they renewed my contract.

"It's beautiful having the calls of other clubs, but I'm happy at Inter."

The veteran shot-stopper also revealed his determination to battle it out with Julio Cesar to be Inter's first choice next term.

He added: "The regular place? There are no regulars or substitutes and here at Inter you always work to be a regular.

"The important thing is that when you achieve a result, the right merits would be given. Last season I've put at the group's service my long Serie A experience and I think this has been seen.

"I think the choice is up to the coach. Personally, when the contract extension has been offered to me, I accepted it immediately.

"I'm not the type of person who contents himself to be a substitute. I want to play."

Mihajlovic happy to play with Vieira

Inter Milan defender Sinisa Mihajlovic claims he would welcome former Arsenal midfielder Patrick Vieira as a team-mate at the San Siro.

Mihajlovic was banned for six matches in 2000 after racially abusing the Frenchman during a Champions League match between Lazio and the Gunners, but he does not have any problems with the former Arsenal man.

Inter have been linked with Vieira and the 37-year-old Serbian says he would love to play alongside the 30-year-old, whose club side Juventus have been relegated to Serie B for match-fixing and are losing most of their star players.

Mihajlovic said: "If he comes, we will be happy and me first of all, even if in the past we had a bust-up, albeit a long time ago. This sort of thing happens on the pitch.
