Considering the market at the time, Baggio and Vialli would have cost substantially more than Ribery. Juve isnt Arsenal, a team that has to take on 17, 18 year old to have a chance of competiting. This is one of the biggest in the world, and Juve is one the most powerful players at Mercato. When Juve wants player desperately, they can compete with anyone, including Real, Inter, Chelski, and Milan. Why do you think Gabriel Milito is joining Juve? Just because we are big? He is exactly what we need, a playmaker who can also play wide or as a 2nd striker and can be groomed as a Nedved replacement.

If we can't get him now we should try and do a deal with Hamburg to get first option on him for next summer.

I agree we need someone to compete with Nedved for the left midfield role, but I don't think he is a proper left midfielder. He likes to play more centrally. I personally think we need someone a bit more solid in the middle, but not two destroyers. We would be too lightweight with VDV in the centre imo, in Serie A at least. In La Liga we might get away with it.

Actually that was his best decision. He was going through a rough patch, formwise and mentally at ajax at that time. He wasn't even close to being ready for a move to one of the elite clubs. He needed a step inbetween, he completely refound himself at Hamburg; finally fullfilling his potential.

VdV is good, but so injury prone and a tad inconsistent.

I still maintain he could have come to Arsenal.Wenger specializes in getting the best out of players like that

Yep, that is the only way to incorporate someone like VDS. Also Nedved and Brazzo are handy defensively so potentially it could work but I am not in favour of it personally.

What people havent mentioned yet is that team rarely pay full transfer fee. They simply don't give other teams lump sum amount of 12m sterling pound as other request you to. For player like VDV, it makes a lot sense to put into contract performance related fees, such as amount of certain amount of money for every game he played or goals he scored. VDV is only saying all this to attract Real, and other teams interest so that he can higher wages from his next employer. When fronted with a serious, concrete offer, he isnt mad enough to refuse financially more lucrative, career-wise benefiting deal like Juve's. I think VDV will end up Bianconeri sooner or later, and he is kind of player that you can see make Buffon believe in the project. Young, immensely talented. If unproven kids like Nani cost 17m sterling pound. Heck, forget add on clause, I say give Hamburg their fee and we got a deal.

I included Arsenal (1) because I suspect you suppor them and (2) it was blatantly implicit in your sentence that Juve is a second class player in the Calcio Mercato. What is point of saying Bayern spend so much, has Juve ever done stuff to match that, when (1) this board is going to be full of Juve fans, and (2) the factual evidence shows that Juve has spent money that Bayern cannot match.

There is no excuse for Juve saying we couldnt get player X because he cost too much, unlike Arsenal. If the player is good, and worth investment Juve can and will get those players. As for Ribery, I am glad we didnt get him. Not because he isnt any good. But they are more prodigal talent like Nasri, who in a year's time will get all the attention in Europe. So save some cash now, and spend it next year when we really push for the whole stuff. I suspect Rosina could be on the market next year, if Torino struggles, and Rosina is far more talented than Ribery though less proven.

You don't spend money you got cash. That is biggest misconception a lot of people on this board don't understand. You pay transfer fees based on the value the player could bring to this team. Juve is a big team - probably bigger than Manchester United. There are many aspects o the team that needs some upgrading. So there are room for big transfer fees, more so than Juve. Of course, cash, short-term liquidity do matter, but that is not the end of whole story.

Mind you, I think ManUre spend too much money kids, should I say unproven at the higest level. They may regret it someday.

If he can stay fit, VDV would walk straight into central midfield.

Yes in the middle, he maybe lightweight but he still tracks back, and can sit deep if needed to aid a full time DM.

VDV would be an outragous addition....if he is fit.

I feel like just completely ignoring this rumour altogether. It's one of those "sounds too good to be true" rumours that you know has about .001% chance of actually coming true.

That said though, if VDV is announced by the team this summer, I'll cream my pants. He would be an instant infusion of class that we need at AM or CM. But I'm not about to believe some wacky German tabloid (I've had enough experience with Bild's motorsports coverage to know how bizarre and wrong their rumours can be).

Theres no shame in that.When Arsene Wenger took us we were a mid table team.Liverpool,Man Utd and Tottenham were richer clubs.Wenger always had to work under a tight budget.IMO he did a great job and i can safely say he is one of the shrewdest(is that a word?) operators in the transfer market.
