There is no geography class at my high school, or my middle/elementary schools either for that matter. Here, geography is integrated with History, so unless you happen to travel alot, or simply take a personal interest in it (as Andy mentioned) you're not going to know the difference between Mexico and Argentina.
In all my history courses, the only maps I can remember in the textbook are that of the United States circa 1867 and Europe circa 1939. Other than that, no geography was covered... at least in my school.

Would rock if Americans came to Europe with maps like that though. Central Station in Amsterdam, ask a Dutchman to "Kindly point us the way to the international train service to the German Empire"

Yes, I know that, however I can also assure you that it's true that less than 30% know of Kazakhstan... simply because that's just how the vast majority of the population here is, whether you want to trust a selective sample or not.
Sebi, I totally aware of what you are saying, and I am also aware that most Americans live in this big ass isolated biosphere, and totally oblivious of whats happening around them in the world. But I also believe that this is gradually changing, with the advent of high speed internet connections, satellite dishes...etc.

But my point was that your assesment lacked any scientific reasoning. That and I was just in an arguing mood:D
