Milan have been provisionally entered into next season's UEFA Champions League after Europe's governing body delayed a final decision until next week.

The Serie A giants were originally thrown out of the competition as part of the match-fixing scandal that has rocked Italian football.

The San Siro club's successful appeal against the verdict saw them reinstated into the competition at the third qualifying stage.

However, Uefa intervened and quickly set up an emergency panel to consider the Italian Football Federation's entries into the two European competitions next season.

A final verdict was expected on Thursday but Uefa have decided to delay the decision until August 2.

Milan will therefore enter Friday's third qualifying round draw in Nyon on a provisional basis pending the outcome of a further meeting next Wednesday.

"As far as the position of Milan is concerned, the panel took note of a report submitted by the Uefa chief disciplinary inspector on the question whether it would be appropriate, due to the particular circumstances, to admit Milan to the 2006-07 Uefa club competitions," Uefa said in a statement.

"Following this report, the emergency panel has decided to further examine whether to admit Milan to the 2006-07 Uefa club competitions.

"Milan and the FIGC will have the possibility to submit their observations in this respect to Uefa.

"The decision, which will be taken by August 2 is subject to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport."

There's precident here - the Marseille match-fixing scandal.

Milan shouldn't be allowed enter Europe. They should be banned for at least a season. The same should hold true of any club involved in match-fixing.

Milan set to play Cork City or Crvena Zvezda in the 3rd qualifying round. :disagree:
Cool. That'll be well worth a trip to Langerland. Red Star are a goal to the good after the Irish leg, but Cork have key players coming back from suspension.

What happens if UEFA don't let them in? Do the European places move down the Serie A table? Can that happen now - surely some of the UEFA Cup teams (not to mention the Intertoto Cup teams) have played a game now?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Milan and Chievo Verona have today been told of their Champions League preliminary round opponents.

The Rossoneri will play either Irish side Cork City or former European champions Red Star Belgrade in the Third qualifying round.

Red Star are 1-0 up in that tie. Milan will play the home leg first.

Little Chievo are also still unsure of their exact opponents as they will come up against the winners of the Levski Sofia [Bulgaria] and Sioni [Georgia] clash which currently stands at 2-0.

Chievo, promoted to the Champions League following the omissions of Juventus and Fiorentina, have never played in the competition before and will make their debut away from home.

Milan’s place in today’s draw in Nyon was only on a provisional basis seeing as UEFA will not rule until August 2 on whether they will take part in the competition following the Calciopoli verdicts.

The first leg ties are set for August 8 and 9, while the return legs will take place on August 22 and 23.

Red Star isn't that bad - I've actually heard of them, unlike half of the clubs in that list.
You've heard of them because they used to be good. They're rubbish now.

Cork won't have those players back for the second leg after all, and they've lost another key player to injury, so Red Star are very likely through.
