Europe's finest to be honoured
Tuesday, 24 August 2004

Fernando Morientes will be up against two of the FC Porto players who denied him another UEFA Champions League winner's medal when the 2004 UEFA European Football Awards are presented on Thursday.

Most Valuable Player
Morientes, on loan from Real Madrid CF, scored nine goals for AS Monaco FC en route to last season's Champions League final where they lost to a Porto side containing Ricardo Carvalho and Deco. That pair compete against the Spanish international for the Most Valuable Player award, open to those who progressed beyond the Champions League group stage. This and the rest of the prizes will be handed out at the Monte Carlo Sporting Club in the awards' seventh edition.

Best Forward
Even if Morientes is pipped as MVP, he is also nominated as best forward alongside Arsenal FC's Thierry Henry, whose 30 English Premiership goals earned him the ESM Golden Shoe for 2003/04. The third striking nominee is AC Milan's Andriy Shevchenko, who scored the decider 12 months ago in the UEFA Super Cup against Porto.

Best Midfielder
Deco is on the shortlist for best midfielder. The inspirational playmaker, now with FC Barcelona having signed the day after representing Portugal in the UEFA EURO 2004™ final, is in contention with two English-based players - Patrick Vieira of Arsenal FC and Chelsea FC's Frank Lampard.

Best Defender
Lampard's new club-mate, €30m signing Ricardo Carvalho, is one of three men contesting the best defender prize. Carvalho was a rock for Porto and Portugal in their thrilling European runs last season, but faces competition from international team-mate Jorge Andrade of RC Deportivo La Coruña and Monaco left-back Patrice Evra.

Best Goalkeeper
Another Porto player, Vítor Baía, is up for best goalkeeper. Iker Casillas's consistently excellent shot-stopping for Madrid has earned him a nomination, along with Juventus FC's Gianluigi Buffon, who has maintained the form that saw him named Most Valuable Player for 2003.

Other awards
Among the other awards to be presented are the EURO 2004™ Player of the Tournament accolade to Greece's Theodoros Zagorakis and special gongs for the winning coaches in the Champions League, UEFA Cup and EURO 2004™ - José Mourinho, Rafael Benítez and Otto Rehhagel.

Baia - Evra - Deco - Morientes is more like it

Henry? Puh-lease!

Baia was in great form all year and he deserves to win it.

Morientes deserves more than all to win the Best Forward award.

As for GKs, TBH I don't know who should win. All three were great last year.

If they look at the performances at the EURO, then there's no way Baia should win the Best GK award. He wasn't at the EURO at all.

    and where's Neddy?

    --No opinion
--Carvalho by a long way, IMHO
--Lampard. I don't think Vieira had a great season - good but not worthy of awards, while Deco was anonymous at the Euro champs. Lampard was Chelsea's Mr. Consistancy, apart from the CL games against Arsenal.
--Morientes. Henry was amazing domestically, but as usual failed to make his mark in Europe or internationally.

    Deco voted Europe's finest
    Thursday, 26 August 2004
European champions FC Porto dominated the UEFA European Football Awards ceremony which took place in Monaco tonight. On the eve of the UEFA Super Cup, the traditional curtain-raiser to the European season, players from Porto's UEFA Champions League-winning team took four of the five main awards with Deco, now of FC Barcelona, voted Most Valuable Player.

    Deco double
Deco received his Best Midfielder accolade from former Germany midfield player and current Hungary coach Lothar Matthäus at the glittering ceremony at the Monte Carlo Sporting Club. The Brazilian-born playmaker, who turns 27 tomorrow, was later called back on stage to accept the Most Valuable Player award from France legend and current UEFA Executive Committee member Michel Platini.

    Distinguished players
The Portuguese international, who joined Barcelona from Porto earlier this summer, follows a long line of distinguished players to have won the ceremony's foremost accolade. Ronaldo, David Beckham, Fernando Redondo, Stefan Effenberg, Zinedine Zidane and Gianluigi Buffon have all claimed this honour since the awards were inaugurated in 1998.

    [/b]Baía honoured
Deco's former Porto colleagues Vitor Baía and Ricardo Carvalho were chosen as Best Goalkeeper and Best Defender respectively. The Porto custodian, who will play in Friday's Super Cup encounter, received his award from ex-Danish No1 Peter Schmeichel. Carvalho, now with Chelsea FC, was handed his prize by Marcel Desailly, the French defender who played for the London club.

    Magical Morientes
The most prolific striker from last season's Champions League, Fernando Morientes, was chosen as Best Forward. Morientes, now back at Real Madrid CF after spending a term on loan with AS Monaco FC, picked up his award from Prince Albert of Monaco.

    Greek double
For the first time, the UEFA European Championship winners were also honoured at the ceremony. Theodoros Zagorakis was presented with his UEFA EURO 2004™ Player of the Tournament award by Didier Deschamps. Zagorakis in turn gave the award for the competition's winning coach to Otto Rehhagel.

    Special presentations
There were also a number of special presentations. Ernie Walker, president of UEFA's stadium and security committee, received the UEFA President's Award from UEFA President Lennart Johansson, while the Order of Merit award went to Jacques Ferran, the former L'Équipe journalist who worked with Gabriel Hanot on establishing the European Champion Clubs' Cup 50 years ago.

    Charity cheque
There was another President's Award for Portugal, with Portuguese Football Federation president Gilberto Madaíl accepting the honour from Mr Johansson. The UEFA Charity Award was presented by UEFA Chief Executive Lars-Christer Olsson to former Italian international Giacinto Facchetti on behalf of the International Sports Federation for Persons with Intellectual Disability, who received the annual UEFA charity cheque for CHF1m.

    So it's :

    Baia - Carvalho - Deco - Morientes
