Well, soccer is the most played youth sport in the nation. That is the one hope for us. But unfortunately, propaganda and media idiots like Jim Rome push kids away from the sport, labeling it childish adjectives and not giving it much of a spotlight. The media here loves to highlight how we aren't very good at the game and how we might "never go far because soccer just isn't our sport." Horse shit, we have kids all over the country playing it.

The problem is a combination of things. Mediocre coaching, poor investment, peer pressure and idiotic stereotypes are certainly part of it. But perhaps the most detrimental fact of all is that NBA, NFL and MLB players get outrageous salaries, far more than an MLS player ever will. If that could be reversed overnight, I bet that in the next decade or two we'd have better athletes on the pitch. After all, folks go where the money is. If there wasn't so much hardcore marketing of these other sports, we'd be in great shape.

Which is why I hate the likes of Jim Rome and hope he is removed from the airwaves. He is a cunt, pure and simple.

This is the EXACT same situation we have in Australia as well.

The media try to brainwash the general public that "Soccer" is not a sport Australians are good at and they try to put it down or hinder its growth at every opportunity. Recently the AFL and NRL were trying to hinder and cause headaches to our bid for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups. Absolute cunts of the highest order the lot of them.

The media and major newspapers always want to bury football in their coverage and always focus on AFL, Rugby League/Union, Cricket etc. Its a shame too, because I reckon our NT is the best representative of our extremely varied and multicultural country.

There is many parallels between our two countries when it comes to the development of football.

I've seen a few games of Seattle Sounders and they seem to have great fans. Have you guys noticed them? They're averaging about 30 000 which is even better than the Baseball team Mariners.

There isn't any way to correct the problem besides proving that we can play on the pitch. So a conglomeration of problems holds our national sides back, increasing the importance of showing up for major tournaments (or in our case, making the quarters).

They do have great fans. It's really great to see that at least a few of the expansion teams are able to produce a good fanbase. Toronto is the same way and hopefully Philly will have a decent base as well.

Andy, I was just talking to a guy that I work with, and his son is actually on the U-18 team, and is being looked at by Blackburn and Everton. He is currently working on getting dual citizenship.

Agreed. But tbh the fact that there are a bunch of amateur dumbasses in the FFA doesn't really help. I don't think the A-League is well handled by them and the same can be said about the world cup bid.

Major tournament is success is a huge aspect. But I think its important to build a brand, build something people can relate to for a while. Something that takes patience and money. One of the biggest mistakes they did here was that they didn't start that at the community and grassroots levels, so it was harder to gain loyalty. There are many teams that span numerous years, so its difficult to have that level of loyalty given the other sports could provide that.
