I noticed that ESPN coverage of Team USA has collapsed post-Confed Cup. I also noticed my Spanish has been getting a lot better since then, watching them on Spanish TV only.

Was he really a "flop" though? I mean, he arrived from the Westchester Flames as a 20 year old. Surely there wasn't much of an expectation behind him, was there?

He was one of the best paid players in the league even then, so naturally there were expectations on him despite his age.

The Swedish league is in a poor state both financially and football-wise, apart from some of the top teams. Even a 20 year old unknown American is something of a high profile signing.
