Former Italy Coach Giovanni Trapattoni has accepted the Republic of Ireland job, according to Press reports.

Sources suggest that the 68-year-old met with the Irish Football Association’s selection committee last night and agreed to take the post when his contract with Red Bull Salzburg expires in May.

Personal terms must still be decided upon, but it seems that an agreement is imminent.

A Milan defensive legend, Trapattoni began his coaching career with the Rossoneri in 1975 before moving to Juventus, where he would spend a decade and secure six Scudetti.

The Lombardy native has experience at international level having been in charge of Italy between 2000 and 2004 before deciding to try his hand at foreign club management with Benfica, Stuttgart and Salzburg.

Liam Brady, who played under Trapattoni at Juventus, is expected to be amongst the backroom staff.

He will continue with that job. His Ireland role is part time.

I think we should do well under Trap O'Toni.

I just hope the Irish media doesn't turn against Trap if we lose our first couple of matches. They can be very negative.
