So I've never been a big gamer, but still, I think I can assemble a top 10. I've always had a preference for strategy games, particularly RTS. A bunch of these choices refer to series - I've played various different versions. Where I haven't indicated otherwise, these are PC games.
1. Championship Manager (now Football Manager)
01/02 was a big favourite. 05 has been the workhorse for a few years. Prior to CM taking over the management game world, I was a fan of FIFA Soccer Manager.
2. C&C Red Alert (various)
Originally on the Playstation, and later on the PC. The king of RTS games. My favourite tactic from RA2 - mind controlled cattle to reveal a radar cloaked base, and later the same cattle returning with explosives attached by a Crazy Ivan.
3. Wipeout (Playstation)
I played this obsessively for a while - a truely addictive hovercraft racing game. Comparing myself with best times on the internet, on the Karbonis track, I was seriously competitive with the best on earth - probably within 0.1s a lap of the God time. Some of its sequels have been more successful, but mainly because they were made easier - in this one, hitting a wall cost you a tonne of time, and with a hovercraft not being the handiest around corners... fun times.
4. GTA (various)
I've lost track of it since it went all 3D on me, but back in the day, I could pick off cops at the edge of the screen with a pistol until I ran out and had to steal another car. If ever I go postal, they'll probably blame poor Rockstar. I particularly enjoyed rampaging around in tanks.
5. Mechwarrior Gold
An old favourite. I loved the cartoon as a kid, and later the books as a teenager. That kind of colours my enjoyment of the game, but still a fun RTS.
6. Flimbo's Quest (Comodore 64)
My first platform game. I enjoyed it far too much.
7. Age of Empires
Back in the day, this ruled. Later versions offer similar fun with improved graphics, but no longer among the best.
8. FIFA 2000 (PS)
I've loved other soccer games - Actua Soccer was fun in its day. but this was the best of them.
9. Space Empires II
Turn based strategy in space. Oh yeah.
10. Boulderdash (C64)
Simple physics - dig out the diamonds, but careful how you let the boulders fall... great fun.
