Some of Italian football’s biggest names have expressed their regret at the sad death of Juventus patron Gianni Agnelli.

The 81-year-old FIAT supremo passed away this morning in Turin after losing his battle against prostate cancer.

"He was an educated man. Someone that was full of respect and elegance," recalled national boss Giovanni Trapattoni.

"He also had great football knowledge. In many ways I owe him everything," added the tactician - who was brought to the Bianconeri by Agnelli himself.

"I’ve always had a close bond with him, one based on respect and affection. He has always stayed close to me in these times."

The club had one of the most successful eras of their history with Trapattoni (pictured) at the helm in the 1980s.

Italian Football Federation chief Franco Carraro also paid tribute to the great man. "He was decisive in making Juventus one of the best and biggest clubs in the world," he noted.

"But all of football will shed a tear for the death of Agnelli who has been so important in the history of this sport."

Juventus legend Michel Platini, who was brought to the club because of Agnelli, has also spoken. "A part of my life has gone," said the Frenchman who led the side to many triumphs at home and abroad.

"I had an unforgettable relationship with him. He gave me so much and taught me to respect life. A great man is no longer with us."

Current Juventus boss Marcello Lippi was also saddened to hear that the club’s honorary President had died.

"He would have loved to celebrate the club win 30 titles and earn another star on our shirt," said the tactician. "I don’t know who will lead the club to that achievement but I’m sure Agnelli will see it from up there."

The Italian Football Federation have also confirmed that there will be a minute’s silence before all Serie A and B matches this weekend.

THE POPE: AGNELLI AN INFLUENTIAL PROTAGONIST OF ITALY'S LIFE
(AGI) - Vatican City, Jan. 24 - Gianni Agnelli "was an influential protagonist of Italian history and he gave himself generously for the good and the economic and social development of this country". This remark came from the Pope, who wrote a message to Turin's Archibishop, in charge of expressing the Pope's condolences to Agnelli's wife, Marella, and to his relatives.
The Pope also assured the cardinal Severino Poletto, who gave Agnelli the Last Rites yesterday, he would personally pray for the famous and lamented Lawyer".
"I call upon God's goodness - Wojtyla also wrote - to give him eternal peace and I especially bless the relatives and all those cry for his death".
John Paul II met Gianni Agnelli many times, both on public occasions - for example in Turin and Ivrea, where he visited Fiat's plants - and in private receptions in the Vatican. The Lawyer never disguised his admiration for Wojtyla and often, being in Rome, participated in solemn ceremonies held by the Pope. (AGI)
