It depends on who we have up top. If we get someone like Sanchez or Aguero (laugh), guys who can run at defenses, then we could field a defensive three in midfield.
I like your idea of a 'cynical' midfield. Let's face it, it was one of the problems (in Europe) of Capello's juve, but at the same time it was what made it so strong. That and quality in every other single position.

What made it strong was Vieira and Emerson winning balls and Camo and Nedved tracking back. Plus we had arguably the best defense in Europe. But as a team, we were weak offensively and it cost us points in Serie A, too.

Trying to copy that Capello side right now with the right acquisitions and coach would secure us 3rd spot at best. We don't have any world class players starting besides Buffon and maybe Chiellini. Under Capello, perhaps 5 or 6 were world class.

Lets see.

Buffon
Thuram
Cannavaro
Zambrotta
Vieira
Emerson
Nedved

Maybe Trezeguet and at times Ibra/Del Piero

So yeah, more.

Good luck with that nowadays.
On top of these 9-10 players, Camo was our best player in 2005/06, even if Zlatan won that award from the fans with Camo coming second. With the exception of Zebina, I think everyone from our starting XI could start for the best European teams.

And yet we still choked in Europe.

That goes to show how limited Capello is as a manager.

We played against a very good Arsenal team, and Fabregas dominated the mid-field, he made some of our veterans look mediocre. Capello made the best out of a very static slow midfield with the likes of Viera, Emerson, and etc. The year before we played good against Liverpool, and it was very close. We came against two tough teams that made it to the final and the games were competitive and very close that would have gone either way, I think Capello did more than enough to get the best out of his team.

Capello just isn't a tournament coach, a knock out coach. He will do it over the season with a stable system, but can't improvise.
