Many have been talking about our older players and how we give them a lot of money. How this club is not a retirement home, which is completely true. It is something we have done really well in the past but couldn't do with this management. Even though we should blame the management for this but it is actually a bit more difficult even for the lesser names in the team.

When we were relegated a few years ago, basically they were asking those players for a commitment and loyalty. That was provided and surely there is a return with loyalty from the club, not simply tossing players out on the street. It is even difficult for players like Zebina and Legro, then imagine how difficult it is for players like Alex, Neddy before him and the rest. Without the loyalty of not only those players we wouldn't have made it back this fast or being competitive that easy.

Many here were up in arms when Balzaratti and to a lesser extent Zanetti were shown the door. We are fans, what would that say about us as a club amongst the players in the world.

I am not saying that we should be a retirement home, I am just trying to shed a bit perspective around this matter. Its much harder than it seems.

i see your view and i can understand where you are coming from but that cant be our excuse for holding onto players who seem to spread the gap between us and the other european giants of football

we are loaded with players above 30...and not replacing them soon enough will only stale any progress we hope to make in the future

we can not accept that half our team is above 30 especially if we play midweek games for european competitions which will only drain the energy out of the squad and lethargic performances become the norm like now

not forgetting out of the so called 90million wage bill we have,more than half of it goes to players with an average age of 50!!

He is not second class. Mistake was thinking of him as World Class. A term which is thrown around these parts too easily and should be reserved for select few players.

I do not watch the Bundesliga a lot, but from the highlights and few games here and there i saw Diego playing in. He was absolutely amazing for them, his current mediocre form is blurring a lot of peoples judgment on him.

Modric is a very good player too, he's having a really good season for Spurs and he has been one of the top midfielders in the EPL when fit.

However the two players play different positions and have different roles in the team. Diego is more attack oriented, he's a much better dribbler, he's got more goals in him, he's got a better shot and he's faster. Modric is more composed, he's a better passer of the ball, you feel he is more intelligent with it and he is the more creative of the two.

I would like to reserve judgment until i see Modric play for a big team. Oh and another thing i want to point out is that Diego whenever given a chance to play for Brazil has been really poor, while Luka has always been brilliant for his NT.

To be honest, i am leaning toward Modric, but like i said, i will reserve judgment until i see Luka playing for a better team.

I think they can play together, especially in a 4-3-1-2. Modric as one of the two CM's in that system. Though i don't see Juve going for him. First he is probably going to be expensive, secondly Juve need fullbacks, defenders and a striker more than they need a CM.

Who's the better player was never my intention to compare. I always said Modric is the more complete midfielder and in fact more suited for Juve because of his versatility...then push went to shove and I was labeled a biased Modric fanboy. I don't give a shit what some think of me, but I've watched Modric for years, before most of you even knew about him, and there's no doubt in my mind he is special. Every year he has raised his game, becoming our most important player at such a young age. Than came the game against Germany in the Euro and all my doubts, as if I ever had them , were gone.

What reserve you hold for Modric, is the same I held for Diego before we signed him. Even though his performances were fantastic, I don't regard Werder as a big club. I'm sad to see things aren't going his way for us and that's why I'm holding my judgement of him till after next season, like I said in the Diego thread earlier.

But for now, my opinion of last season, however biased it may be, still stands.

I agree with your point there, I was trying to point out the difficulty involved with this situation.

The problem the management did with their project is that it involved replacing the stars that left with no plan to replace the older players. Even Diego wasn't really a planned replacement for neddy.

The wage bill problem is not only about the old guard and those fringe players that stayed in Serie B (they are the ones who I was trying to make a point about). The problem is your Grygeras, Brazzos and Tiagos of the world.
