swap De Ceglie with....em....Contreao,and we have a pretty impressive backline and with youth on its side, time to grow together and improve
Youth isn't really an advantage when you talk about a defense. Every single great team has at least 2 (most have 3) defenders in the back 4 with huge experience in the big matches, with thousands of duels against the best players in the world.

Maicon-Lucio-Samuel-Zanetti
Maicon-Materazzi-Samuel-Chivu
Zebina-Thuram-Cannavaro-Zambrotta
Cafu-Nesta-Stam-Maldini
Thuram-Ferrara-Montero-Zambrotta
---------
Motta-Bonucci-Chiellini-De Ceglie

Who are we kidding here? The above ones are the defenses that won serie A in the last 10 years. Just compare those with ours and weep.
Those are some impressive back lines, damn.

You underrate our defense. It's surely weaker than those but c'mon!

Bonucci and Chiellini are both great while Motta is good and he's gonna be helpful. If we get a LB we're gonna have second best defense in Serie A because both Milan and Roma have weaker than that.
The defense isn't just a bunch of names put together. It's the part of the team that needs the longest to gel and play as a unit. There isn't a single big team in the world that has three defenders in the starting XI with almost 0 experience, two of which are terrible in defending.

Oh, and both Milan and Roma (right now) have much better defense than ours. Roma has a coach who can organize a good defense and who already did it. It's a defense that already played together and that has 2-3 players in it with massive experience at the top level. Milan have a very good and already proven CB pair, plus they got Sokratis who is only a defender and who keeps his position all the time.

Our defense will need way too much time to develop an understanding, and even if it does, Motta and De Ceglie will still be a problem because they simply can't defend.

Both Roma and Milan have good CBs but their full backs are crap. Especially Roma's right side and Milan's left.

In all honesty only Inter has superb defense that can do amazing in Europe too. Others? No way. But I don't think they are far ahead of us anyhow.

Riise and Cassetti? Abate, Antonini? That's a joke.

I still think that Milan's left side (Zambrotta) is better than De Ceglie and Roma's right side (Cassetti) put Motta on the bench.
And again, it's not only about the quality of the individual (which is obviously important) but it's also about the time that defense spent together, how organized it is (it's not like we had good defense during Ranieri's era, but at least it was extremely well organized) and the experience of its players.

Ours lacks both quality, time together and experience.

Zambrotta is terrible.

Under Ranieri? I don't really care who he picks because it's not the first time he benches better player. There is no foreign coach that would play him, I bet. It's just "hardwork" that goes by, he's a terrible defender. Pepe is going to eat both him and Taddei when we meet them.

I see your point and you are right. But you seem to bash even promising quality. It's not like we're in CL or aiming to win it. We're rebuilding shit team and this had to be done sooner or later. We couldn't focus on defense much because every our department was falling apart.

Sure, it will take them some time to gel. But if we sign a left back we'll have pretty solid defense. Miles better than what we had last season.

but at least it is an upgrade from last season. Then again I guess anything would be an upgrade from last season.

I'm not really sure that it's an upgrade from last season. In long term maybe, but last year's defense, apart from being bad, also had the handicap to be exposed all the fucking time.

Looking from purely defensive aspect, no player in today's defense is a better DEFENDER than the players we had last year.

I only have hopes for Bonucci. I have no doubt that Motta and De Ceglie will sooner or later be replaced.

You have a point but Bunucci although expensive was the type of signings I hoped Beppe would make this Mercato. Young, promising and growth. Not like Juve have the money like City to blow their brains out. It'll be a growth process with this team. I just hope it competes well enough to get a CL spot this year

Great, so we have to start again at the RB spot.

I seriously thought we would end up with a more proven RB, but I guess not.
