Actually our first need after fullbacks is decent let winger unless Nedved stays. We need a striker only if Trezeguet leaves and i can't see how we could need CM, if we already have too much CM's - Tiago, Zanetti, Marchisio, Almiron, also Ekdal is knocking at the first team's door's. Unless we sell two of them, i can't see much rrom for another, since we have to topclass DM's too.
Wrong! We didn't buy Diego to play 4-4-2; hence, we don't need a left winger after Nedved retires, because we won't be adopting a system that requires the utilization of one. If we play 4-3-2-1 we can use Gio and Diego behind a lone striker; if we deploy a 4-3-1-2 formation, Diego can play behind Del Piero/Gio and Amauri/Trez/Iaq. In the event that we choose to implement a 4-2-3-1 formation we can play with 3 attack minded players across the midfield (namely Camo, Diego, and Gio) supporting Amauri or Trez.
We will, in all probability, be selling Tiago and disposing of Almiron in the nearest garbage can, so we might need to acquire a Hamsik/Asamoah/Xabi Alonso; however, that is not a necessity at this point in time, as we have Sissoko, Marchisio, Zanetti, and Poulsen who can all play as the 2 DM's in midfield. Ekdal will probably be loaned out to gain experience (I know Andy hates the thought of it, but it will happen).
Our main concern right now, the main focus of our mercato should shift to the defense. Buy a quality RB, sell Zebina and demote Grygera to the bench. If we can pick up a good quality CB, who has the potential to be WC in the process, then let's go for it.

We didn't buy Tiago and Almiron to play 442 either, read the interwievs of Ranieri in summer of 2007 and you will see, that he wanted 3 man midfield at start, but in the end he was forced to go for 442 since the squad couldn't adapt. What if we end up like this in summer of 2009 also but with no-one able to play left wing in our team? Will Diego, Giovinco or even Iaquinta play out of position whole year long? We can't go in the new season without plan B.
Giovinco can play the left flank, if it is a necessity, and we also have other players such as Sali and DC who are versatile enough to adopt that role; even Iago from the Primavera can be given an oppotunity, if the need arises. I have been hearing wonderful things about the kid. In any case, my point is that the left side of midfield is the least of our worries at present,and considering we don't even have all the pieces we need to deploy or implement Plan A, we shouldn't even be discussing Plan B.
Unfortunately, we are not in an enviable position like teams such as Inter, Barca, or Man United, where tweaking a couple of things and making a few minor adjustments will result in a plethora of options.

Apart from fullbacks which are needed in any situation, how come we don't have the players to play three man midfield formation? Sissoko, Zanetti, Camoranesi, Marchisio, Tiago, Poulsen, Marchionni and in major injury crisis even Ekdal completes our 3 man midfield very well. If we are buying another midfielder, than we better buy a decent left winger, who could adapt to three man midfield and not decent midfielder, who could adapt to left wing.

It didnt adapt because of our weak defense mostly!! And the lack of creativity.
We have now an abundance of creativity.
To ensure that we wont have to face similar problems, we will have to fix our defense.

I agree with you that it'll be it at the start of campaign, even when we still don't know the name of coach, but unless it's Capello, im pretty sure our new coach is going to play 4312. But it still is important that if Diego get's injured and Gio doesn't deliver, we concede hell lot of goals or we are just going through a bad patch, that we are able to change something and natural lefty would make us way more versatile. Remember Nocerino playing on right wing? Remember Iaquinta and Palladino playing on wing? I don't want to remember.
