The Evil Dead trilogy (the first one at least was banned in Ireland until 1997!) is his big claim to fame. He's a big B-movie star.
I once went to see a film of his in the IFI, Bubba Ho-Tep, in which he plays Elvis (or a crazy guy who thinks he's Elvis) and teams up with a black guy who thinks he's JFK to fight a mummy attacking their retirement home*. Anyway, I went with three friends, two of them big Bruce Campbell fans. The third turns to them and says, "So, who is the Bruce Campbell guy anyway, and does he really have only two fans?" The row in front of us stands up in unison and turns to look at this guy. One of them speaks to me and my Campbell-loving friends, "Hi, we're from the First Church of Bruce. Um, can we kill him, or would you like to?"
*Yes, that kind of actor. It's a surprisingly smart film all the same, funny, meditative about the indignities of old age, and utterly refusing to take itself seriously. Also, you'll never see a more touching "going down with all guns blazing" scene.
