My bro in Chicago is in a major bail-out, 137-year-flood situation himself. Talked to him yesterday afternoon, and he's in the middle of deciding whether to abandon his house or not with my nephew as his three sump pumps lose the battle of the water table outside.

And Hurricane Ike was nothing for them compared to the Pacific Tropical Storm Lowell of all things...

ok so ike hit my quasi-hometown of houston (clear lake aka nasa) and we (ppl on the southside of h-town) were hit bad. even though it was a cat-2 it still did enough damage and then the storm came up here to dallas where it unravelled into a thunderstorm

all in all it was a bad weekend for h-town being that the damage report starts at an estimated $8 billion, only to increase

ya i heard about that, and zambrano threw a no-hitter against the 'stros up in milwaukee for that make-up game

all because of that cat-2 motherfucker named ike

    Actually, Texas was pretty lucky. Count your blessings.

    That motherfucker Ike should have been a Category Four, but the cyclone was too stretched for intensification. The cyclone will become more powerful the tighter the wind field is in the storm, but in this case the wind field was too big.

    It's just like a figure skater spinning. The more she pulls her arms into her body (the more tightly wrapped she is), the faster she will spin. Ike was trying to spin with arms up in the air.

    ya but it still left SoHo torn up enough to leave more than half the city without power or electricity and its been 3 days since the storm passed

    Yeah, it looks pretty bad. Galveston is pretty much done.

    Hurricanes, train crashes, financial disasters... is the end of the world coming?

    Seriously. The 'stros can't be playing away games against Chicago when we're 2 games back in the Wild Card. MLB just tossed up the big screw you in that series.

    A earthquake of magnitude 6.2 has hit Balochistan province in south-western Pakistan, shortly before dawn.

    It struck 70km (45 miles) north of Quetta at 0409 local time (2309GMT Tuesday) at a depth of 10km, the US Geological Survey said.

    Reports say several people have been treated for minor injuries.

    "We don't have any reports of damage. Things are OK so far," city police officer Salahuddin told the Reuters news agency.

    "There were two tremors, the second one was serious and people rushed out of their houses," said Amjad Hussain, a resident of Quetta.

    A hospital official told Reuters that 15 people had received treatment for minor injuries, mostly caused when mud walls collapsed or in the ensuing panic.

    Earthquakes aren't really meteorological phenomena, but I'll let it slide. ;)

    Thankfully it was only an average Richter scale magnitude.

    There was actually a minor earthquake near Harrisburg, PA the other day.

    Yeah a little. Most events in nature dealing with Earth systems interest me, minus ecosystem stuff.

    Geology is pretty cool when you get to talk about earthquakes, mountain formations, et cetera.

    Yea, tell me about it. I'm taking environmental science this semester and minus the ecosystem everything has been pretty interesting, especially the plate tectonic chapter.

    I'm scared for California :D

    The big one will come someday, probably turning LA into an island. Can't be all bad. I'm sure the marketers will love to do away with the poor population and advertise LA as an "Island Paradise."
