Nesta KO, Camoranesi OK Monday 3 July, 2006

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Alessandro Nesta has been officially ruled out of the World Cup semi-final with Germany, but Mauro Camoranesi will be available for Italy.

Both men have been struggling with injuries and only the Juventus midfielder has come through tonight’s training session unscathed.

Although there was widespread pessimism that Nesta would be able to recover from a groin strain in time, whispers in Germany on Monday suggested that he may have made an unexpected return.

Nesta did start training at the Westfalenstadion in Dortmund, but had to pull out after just 10 minutes of a practice game.

“He won’t be at our disposal,” said boss Marcello Lippi this evening. “We tried to recover him, but without pushing him too far.

“We already stated on Sunday that he wasn’t likely to feature, let’s hope that he can be available for one last important game.”

Nesta and the suspended Daniele De Rossi are the only squad members not available to Lippi after Camoranesi passed a fitness test.

The winger has missed a number of training sessions since picking up a knee injury in the 3-0 win over the Ukraine on Friday.

Although Lippi is again giving little away with regard to his starting XI, the Argentine-born star is likely to start on the right.

Marco Materazzi, following his one match suspension, is set to pip Andrea Barzagli to Nesta’s shirt in the centre of defence.

Tonight’s practice game sides were…

Team one: Buffon; Oddo, Nesta, Barzagli, Zaccardo; Gattuso, Pirlo, Perrotta; Totti, Toni, Iaquinta.

Team two: Peruzzi: Zambrotta, Cannavaro, Materazzi, Grosso; Camoranesi, Barone, De Rossi; Gilardino, Inzaghi, Del Piero.

Penalties were also practiced at the end of the session with Massimo Oddo, Materazzi and Camoranesi amongst those most heavily involved.

if it goes to penaltys matrix is the most unlikely option to choose. why lippi likes to use defenders in penaltyshootout? like montero in cl. and even then, oddo and zambro should have better strike on goal with foot, then materazzi.

Matreazzi was the penalty taker at Perugia, he's actually supposed to be very good :) Btw, Pessotto was good . And also Nesta .

I'd probably go like this if had a choice:

Del Piero
Materazzi/Nesta
Pirlo
Toni
Totti

but I DON'T want a shootoout at any cost.

possibly.it could work either way as both of them would definatley take penalties if they're on the field by then.im hoping that the match doesnt go to penalties or even extra time.penalties because italy suck at them, and extra time because its more boring than a macroecnomics class.removing the golden goal rule has taken so much sting out of extra time.it used to be tension filled back then, but now its only boring with both teams too exhausted to do anything other than pass the balla round aimlessly.

So whats your prediction for tonights game Dominic?
Oh the Germans will win, probably in typical fashion. Late equaliser(Italy had taken the lead, but fail to finish it) and extra time goal or penalties to win it. Either way, I think the WC champion will come from this match.

Your prediction?

Well i think the ref while be the main star in this one & i wont be surprised to see 50/50 challenges going Germany's way.My heart says Italy, but FIFA logic says Germany.

No offence to any German supporters, but this hsould have been an Argentina - Italy fixture. If Italy dont win this one, i want France to take the cup again.

After flying the flag for Italy at the American grand prix over the weekend, Ferrari ace Michael Schumacher has backed his native Germany to reach the World Cup Final.

The German is a keen football enthusiast and although he has strong links with the peninsula given his success for the Maranello-based outfit, the multiple Formula One world champion is only supporting one team on Tuesday night.

“It's natural what my heart is going for," said Schumi after he comfortably won at Indianapolis, ahead of teammate Felipe Massa, to close the gap on championship leader Fernando Alonso.

"Although it's mixed up a little bit, the majority sticks to the German side.

"I have got tickets for the Final and of course I'm hoping that I'll be able to root for the German team when that day comes,” he added.

Schumacher actually visited the German outfit in May as the hosts were preparing for the tournament.

It is also understood that Schumacher received a congratulatory text message from German striker Lukas Podolski after he comfortably won in USA on Sunday night.

Oddo is a great penalty and set piece taker.
